Renowned agent Maria Selleck provides insights into the Macarthur region

Maria Selleck is the owner and director of Maria Selleck Properties and has been selling homes in Macarthur since 2009. With 13 years of experience in the area, she knows a thing or two about Macarthur and what makes it such a tightly held region in Canberra’s south.

According to Zango data, the current median sale price is $725,000. This is a drastic increase from 2019 when the median sale price was $650,000. That’s up $75,000 in two years, making Macarthur one of the many suburbs in Canberra that have experienced a market boom.

Maria Selleck currently has three Macarthur suburb records to her name. Maria’s first record price sale was in 2009 when she sold 14 Kater Close for $765,000. The next record set by Maria was in 2017 when 5 Dennys Place was snapped up for $1 million. The current record price was obtained in March 2021, when 93 Jackie Howe Crescent sold for $1.3 million, beating the previous record set in 2017 by a massive $300,000.

When asked about her success in the region, Ms Selleck humbly said that it came down to "doing what I normally do."

“We go out of our way to ensure that the house is looking its very best,” she said.

Ms Selleck isn’t expecting prices in Macarthur to flatten out anytime soon.

“Houses have been upgraded and updated,” she said.

“Macarthur has a lot of facilities close to it and you don’t have many houses coming up for sale at the same time, so it is a very tightly held area.”

“People who buy into Macarthur tend to stay there.”

According to Ms Selleck, the vendors of her three record-sales in the region sold to either move for business or interstate.

A number of houses have recently sold in Macarthur with two selling well all over the current median sale price of $725,000. A spacious four-bedroom property at 8 Jackie Howe Crescent and listed with McIntyre Property sold for $1.203 million on 19 July 2021. Another four-bedroom house at 9 Ebsworth Close and listed with Ray White Canberra sold for $1.12 million on 15 June 2021.

Two other properties at 5 Kater Close and 14 Hardie Close, both of which have four-bedrooms and two-bathrooms, have undisclosed prices but have also been snapped up in July this year.

While a small suburb and with a close-knit community, it is clear that Macarthur is a place where families in Canberra congregate.

“There is very good schooling next to it,” Ms Selleck said.

Renowned schools nearby include Caroline Chisholm School and Gilmore Primary School.

“You also have the Chisholm shops very close by and there are views from the higher and lower sides of the area,” Ms Selleck said.

Macarthur is bordered by the Wanniassa Hill Nature Reserve and offers sweeping views of nature wherever you are.
