Couple who 'weren't looking to buy' pay record price for heritage style home in Lyneham

A young family who “weren’t even looking to buy” paid a suburb record-breaking price for their dream home in Lyneham on Saturday.

The gardens around the heritage style home on Duterrau Crescent were a key selling point for the new owners according to sales agent Andrew Lonsdale from Ray White Canberra, as well as a “huge master suite” and a studio/games room with its own bathroom and kitchenette.

While the sale price is not being disclosed, it broke the previous record of $1.861m held by a new build on Mackennal Street, Lyneham.

“The buyers saw it online and could just see themselves living in the home,” Andrew says.

“Which is interesting because that’s exactly what happened with the sellers a few years ago.”

Six kilometres away in Aranda, Andrew broke another suburb record on Saturday with this four-bedroom home on Gundara Street.

The home sold at auction for $1.8m to an older couple who are moving into Canberra from acreage just outside the city. A “manageable” house with a beautiful garden to maintain made it the perfect choice for the retired couple.

“They’re keen gardeners and loved the absolute privacy of the property,” Andrew says.

There’s always strong demand for homes in Aranda according to Andrew, partly because it’s close to exceptional schools but mostly because it offers the quintessential Canberra life.

“Aranda is about as convenient as it gets,” Andrew says.

“It’s close to bushland and close to some of the best shopping in the Belconnen area. It’s a suburb where everything you need in life is about five minutes away - from kids’ sport to good coffee.”

Meanwhile in Canberra’s south, homes in Wanniassa reached the $1.6m plus mark on the weekend.

This home on Brodribb Street sold at auction on Saturday for a suburb record of $1.63m. Sales agent Brian McPherson of LJ Hooker Woden/Weston described the home as “exquisitely finished” with “an epic of glamorous interiors flowing effortlessly to support living and working well.”

With an outdoor sauna and ironbark timber flooring, the Wanniassa home also features its own fully-cabled IT server room.
