Charming 1890s cottage in Braidwood offers a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern comforts

This quaint historical cottage close to the heart of Braidwood is a step back in time but with modern conveniences.

Belle Property Braidwood real estate agent Ashley Williams says 5 Malone Street is more than a home, it’s a slice of local history.

“People love to buy a little bit of history with their homes as well,” she says.

“These homes have a story back to when they were built, and it shows in the high ceilings and panelling features that make them unique and special.”

The current owners renovated the weatherboard 1890s cottage, though original features remain.

When the next owners (and their visitors) arrive and walk across the covered verandah, they’ll be stepping on century-old original ironbark floorboards in parts of the home as they discover three well-sized bedrooms and tasteful renovations nodding to the past.

“These renovations show the character that was in the property before,” Ashley says.

“It has contemporary elements for a fresh and modern feel, but several old features remain.”

The renovations included a fresh paint job inside and outside and new carpet.

Located on a quiet cul-de-sac, it also features a north-facing sunroom and pops of colour in the decorative stained-glass windows in several rooms.

“It is such a private and peaceful spot on Malone Street,” Ashley says.

“If you have the opportunity to get your hands on a sweet Braidwood cottage, you are pretty lucky.

“There are cottages around, but to get one like this is pretty special as it’s in such great condition and has been renovated nicely.”

As for modern creature comforts, the cottage also features a 900 mm gas stove and electric oven, dishwasher, air-conditioning and even a spa-style bathtub in the bathroom.

There is a slow-combustion wood-burning fireplace to keep the winter chill away.

To head outside, pass through the French doors, descend the stairs at the back of the house, and head outside the home to see a rainwater tank, chicken coop, free-standing shed, and under-house storage.

“It comes with a typical cottage garden that is already established with flowers and small trees, and there are also fruit trees on the property,” she says.

While the heritage aspects of this property are easy to see, Ashley says you shouldn’t discount the charming town of Braidwood, just over an hour from Canberra.

“There are so many cafes and boutique stores around,” she says.

“The community is fantastic. You walk down the street and can always talk to someone.

“There are plenty of events in the area and the people are very welcoming.”

If this sounds at all appealing, Ashley says to get in quick.
