Even the home gym at 137 Hawkesbury Crescent has wow factor.

So it’s little wonder that the five-bedroom, two-bathroom home — formerly the residence of a British High Commissioner — set a new record for Farrer on the weekend, selling for $2.85 million.

A 50-strong crowd watched on as two Canberra families fought for ownership, but it was a family living down the hill from the property in Farrer who eventually claimed the title.

Luton Properties sales agent Sophie Luton says she was thrilled but not surprised the home set a new record in Canberra’s south.

“I get asked about Hawkesbury Crescent a lot, it’s one of those streets people dream of living in,” she says.

“It’s highly sought after and when properties do come on the market - which is rare - they’re in huge demand.

“We had people who were looking for a new home now, but also people who were interested in purchasing the property for their own future, simply because it’s on Hawkesbury Crescent.”

More than 80 groups poured through the home during its three week marketing campaign, with Luton Properties issuing 15 separate contracts.

According to Sophie, an underground wine bar, named by the former owners ‘The Hawkesbury Wine Tasting Room’ was universally loved by people who inspected the property.

“It used to be a storage space and during COVID, when the owners were stuck at home, they thought, what can we do with this space?” she says.

“And so it became a hidden wine room. It’s a lovely story from what was a really hard time.”

Built in the 1970s, the home had been extensively modernised by the previous owners, with luxury details including engineered timber floors, LED lights throughout and hydronic heating.

The ‘undeground’ level of the home includes The Hawkesbury Wine Tasting Room, a gym, a rumpus room and triple garage with mechanics’ car pit.

“It was a home that ticked every single box,” Sophie says.

“It wasn’t one thing that sold the property it was a combination of many things: it backs onto a reserve, has incredible views, is on a huge block and the home is spacious.

“The former owners have loved living there and are so thrilled another young family is moving in.”
