Which of these cheeky Canberra bumper stickers is your fave?

Local artists, designers and makers Gold St Press have launched a new series of bumper stickers — and we’ll take one of each please.

From Kingsley’s and Red Hill Lookout to Belconnen Mall, nothing is sacred in the set of four stickers launched to celebrate Canberra’s 111th birthday last month.

Patrick Galvin and Elly Freer launched Gold St. Press from their home in Watson two years ago, uniting their artistic talents with a deep love of their hometown. You can see their stunning freehand retro artwork on display across the capital, including a space mural at the UNSW campus in Reid.

Gold St. Press are regulars at the Canberra Handmade Markets and and have an Etsy store where they sell caps, enamel camping mugs, brooches, camp flags, greeting cards, soy wax candles and handmade art prints. Most art features beloved Canberra icons, with a delicious dark side to almost everything else they sell.

The new Canberra bumper stickers are our absolute fave.

“To celebrate Canberra Day this year, we wanted to shine a light on some of the less glamorous parts of Canberra that we appreciate regardless,” Patrick says.

“If you're gonna love this place, you've gotta love it warts and all.”

Which sticker would you proudly display on your rear bumper?

Dude, where’s my car?

Get worse than exiting the mall onto P3 on a scorching hot summer’s day (or in the pouring rain) and not remembering where you parked. It’s cars at 45-degree angles as far as the eye can see, and the odds of finding yours are about one in 800, which is how many parks there are on the top level. Good luck with that.

“The Belconnen Mall sticker came about while I was out shopping one day and we were texting back and forth brainstorming sticker ideas,” Patrick says.

“Among it all, I lost the car. I've lived in Canberra for 29 of my 38 years on this earth and I don't think I will ever understand the parking at Belconnen Mall.”

Smoke it up.

Patrick: “As a family, we love to camp at Woods Reserve just near Corin Forest and Elly has always found the stretch of skid marks and blown tyres so funny.

“It's this beautiful scenic vista with remnants of some absolute ratbags. Feels like a real microcosm of Canberra as a whole.”

Love is in the air.

Mount Ainslie has always been a famous spot for canoodling, but it turns out southsiders preview the sweeping views from Red Hill when they’re looking for a little quiet time with a new love interest.

“Ever since I was a teenager I've found it so funny that Red Hill is this incredibly affluent part of town where people go to do nefarious things,” Patrick says.

“I imagine there's houses with long dinner tables and chandeliers looking out towards a hill where a bunch of teenagers are hotboxing a Camry.”

A local delicacy.

“Credit where credit is due, this one is our tribute to a classic sticker we've seen that says the same thing about Chicken Twisties,” Patrick says.

“We agree on both fronts and we're willing to fight about it.”

The Canberra bumper sticker range is available at the Gold St. Press store on Etsy.
