What it's like to spend a night in this Canberra tiny house AirBNB

Thinking about investing in a tiny house? Abbey Donaldson spent the night at Ginninderry’s ‘Mini-G’ (now available to book via Airbnb) where she discovered that good things do indeed come in small packages.

Tiny house living is here to stay as the world embraces the idea of living more sustainably – not to mention the potential for earning additional income or providing flexible housing for teens and ageing parents.

I’ve been intrigued about the ‘tiny house movement’ for a while and often wondered just how practical these small homes really are. When I found out that Ginninderry was opening up their ‘Mini-G’ tiny home for overnight stays, I was the first to book!

I invited a friend to join me for a girls night in and we headed to Ginninderry to see what all the fuss is about.

In a nutshell (or shipping container), Mini-G is an example of a tiny house that may be considered for installation on your block in addition to your primary residence.

Built by Queanbeyan-based company Stack Space, the Mini-G is a 20-foot shipping container that is fully equipped with numerous mod cons, a terrace, kitchen, bathroom and skylight windows for beautiful views.

Our first impression when we walked inside is that it’s a lot roomier than you expect, with every ounce of space being ingeniously used. The galley kitchen features everything you could possibly need, the bathroom is surprisingly roomy and storage spaces were hidden everywhere, including under the bed and living area seating.

What Mini-G might lack in size, it certainly makes up for in style. We loved the funky orange décor, the beautiful hardwood floors, and the industrial style staircase that led to the loft bedroom upstairs.

This tiny home even boasts a balcony that overlooks the Brindabella’s in the distance. A very nice place to enjoy a wine we thought. But first we decided to explore the region via electric bikes.

In partnership with BYKKO, Australia’s first electric-bike share company, Ginninderry is providing residents with an innovative and environmentally-friendly form of transportation. The electric bikes have a range of 60km on a single charge and can reach speeds of up to 25km/h. We took them for a spin around the village (not at full speed mind you), and let me tell you, they are a lot of fun.

After a bit of exercise, we returned to enjoy the views from the balcony, complete with bubbly and a cheese board: the perfect spot to unwind with your bestie or significant other. We prepared and cooked a divine pizza in the galley kitchen, using the good-sized oven.

After a good night’s sleep in the very comfortable bed, I woke up to a stunning sunrise overlooking Ginninderry – a great spot to enjoy a morning cuppa.

It was then time to road test the shower – for many the most important part of any overnight accommodation. The little luxuries provided by the Ginninderry team made for a refreshing start to the day and the shower itself was particularly spacious with good water pressure.

Overall, the Mini-G offered an intrepid yet comfortable experience to create the perfect night of escapism – and a great way to trial tiny home living. It has everything you need for a simplified lifestyle or for completely self-contained accommodation for additional family members or guests.

If you want to experience ‘living small’ for yourself, you can test drive the Mini-G by booking your own stay through Airbnb here.
