Former police station seeks buyers who want a home 'with a story'

It would be a crime to not consider this Gunning property as you look for your new home.

Built in 1847 to serve as the Gunning Police Barracks and Court of Petty Sessions, 2 Wombat Street is now a four-bedroom home literally bursting at the seams with character.

McCann Properties real estate agent Ian Blackburn describes the property as "a piece of Australian history".

“It was the police station and Court of Petty Sessions for Gunning and the wider region until it was decommissioned at the turn of the 19th century," Ian says.

“Instead of having people go to a senior court, more minor offences were dealt with at the property."

The original building was built in the late 1800s, Ian says, in the ‘brick nog’ construction method of the era: where a frame was filled with bricks.

It's located on a 3,000sqm block and has two separate wings out the back of the original building, separated by a gorgeous courtyard. One of these wings is original, while the other has been added, and both connect to the main building by wide verandahs.

“The new wing was built in the same style as the original building,” Ian says.

“It's is an older home, and it still feels like an older home from yesteryear."

The home features timber-lined ceilings, French doors, Australian cedar doors, architraves and skirting boards.

Throughout the house, there is ducted gas heating, as well as panel heaters and a wood heater to chase away the winter chill.

The property also boasts spaces for entertaining, Ian says.

“It has the large, deep covered verandahs, but also a very private outdoor entertaining area," he says.

There's an existing garden, a butler’s pantry, four parking spaces, a tack room for the horses, two lock-up garages with a car hoist and a dishwasher.

Surrounding the home are two stables, three sheds and 5,000 and 1,100-litre water tanks. This is a chance to get in early on a growing community, Ian says.

“The school has doubled in size in the last 10 years." he says.

“Gunning itself has got a great community, and a lot of infrastructure for a small town."

Gunning is a 30-minute drive from Goulburn, Yass and Canberra. The heritage property would be a stunning place to work from home.

“You can go into the office for a face-to-face meeting with the team, but ever since the COVID pandemic began, Zoom meetings from your living room are all the go now and there’s excellent internet at the property," Ian says.

A young family looking to put roots down or those looking for an investment property or Airbnb option should add the property to their list, Ian says.

“If you want to move to Gunning and live the quiet life, enjoy the community, that’s something you can do.”

2 Wombat Street, Gunning, will be auctioned at 4pm on Tuesday 22 August 2023.
