Belconnen family ‘seriously upgrade’ to become new owners of Capricorn Park Stud

The news that Capricorn Park Stud was on the market in April sent Canberrans into a social media frenzy — and now we can announce that the iconic property has officially sold.

A Belconnen couple with three young children – all boys – purchased the property last month for $2.65 million. Their new six-bedroom home is the stud’s original 1960s homestead and comes with a 50-acre backyard, including an orchard and chicken run.

“They loved the perfect mix between modern and eclectic style, the space for living in the home, the views and the pool,” sales agent Sam McGregor from MARQ Property says.

“They knew the huge backyard would be the perfect place for three young boys to grow up, while basically staying the same distance from work and the Canberra CBD.”

Located 15km north of Canberra in Springrange, NSW, Capricorn Park Stud was established in the late 1960s as a cowboy-style Quarterhorse training and breeding facility. In the early 1990s, new owners changed it to a first-class Thoroughbred training facility.

It’s interesting to note that the new owners of Capricorn aren’t officially horse people, but with the equine infrastructure on the property including eight covered tie-up stalls, a fully enclosed sand roll yard and heated wash bay, that could change.

Interested buyers from Perth, Sydney and Melbourne streamed through the property during its five-month selling period, while other land owners from Springrange took the opportunity to size up the estate in relation to their own holdings.

“The style of the home – a genuine resort style dwelling – was absolutely loved by everyone who viewed it,” Sam says.

“The consensus was that it genuinely felt like a ski lodge … that might have been that it was on the market through winter.

“The gardens and views were also an absolute stand out. A kitchen, pool and outdoor living area that looks over a private river and golf course, with manicured lawns, trees and gardens, was consistently loved by everyone who viewed the home.”

Initial interest in the property went through the roof in April when Zango published an article announcing the iconic estate was up for grabs. More than 100,000 Canberrans engaged with the article, proving Capricorn is an estate Canberrans have “a real affinity for”.

“Travelling along the Barton Highway speaks to road trips with the family, visiting relatives in Yass, Wagga, Tumut and Melbourne,” Sam says.

“There isn’t a Canberran out there that hasn’t driven past property at one time or another and been impressed by its position along the road, the racetrack and the immaculate gardens.

“As we’ve watched Canberra and the region grow, the property has never changed. It’s always been a staple of white fencing, green lawns and red roses.”
