“It’s stupidly expensive in Canberra — I might have to buy in Queanbeyan!”For years I’ve heard this quip around the office and among my friends in the market for a new home, and it’s always baffled me.Where did the perception that Queanbeyan is where you go to buy if you can’t afford to live in Canberra come from? Queanbeyan has always been pitched as Canberra’s older, poorer cousin but I’ve reviewed the data and it’s much cheaper to buy in several Canberra suburbs than it is to buy in little old Queanbeyan.<img alt="2-yuruga-close-karabar-nsw-2620-87700-image-0-20231004054636525281-crop-c0-5__0-5-1600x750-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="375" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/2-yuruga-close-karabar-nsw-2620-87700-image-0-.width-800.jpg" width="800">The median house price in Queanbeyan in 2023 is $765,000 – so if you’re looking to live somewhere less expensive try Charnwood ($641,000), Holt ($740,000) or Banks (also $740,000). Yes it is.Firstly, welcome to the estate no-one could be bothered naming. Secondly, who even knew this area existed in Canberra? Apparently, it’s a small row of houses facing Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club. And here I was thinking Harcourt Hill and Nicholls were the only posh areas on the north side.I hear (from JT at MARQ Property) that properties in Golf Course Estate are tightly held and only come up for sale very, very rarely.

<h2 data-block-key="5k78i">The Crestwood castle</h2>Crestwood (the fancy name given to West Queanbeyan) is a magnificent display of second and third generation Macedonian, Italian and Greek architecture. Dream homes belonging to the children of immigrants who came from eastern Europe to build Canberra. Think two and three-storey brick dwellings with giant verandahs held up by thin Greek Corinthian columns, concrete front and back lawns and flourishing vegetable gardens.Upstairs lives mum, dad and the kids, while the self-contained flats underneath house many a Baba and Dedo, Oma and Opa, Yiayia and Papou.Living among the steep streets Crestwood means you always have plenty of lemons, zucchinis and peppers from your neighbours over the fence.<a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/29-stuart-street-crestwood-nsw-2620-74991/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Check out this Crestwood beauty located close to the Roos Club.</a><h2 data-block-key="e64gl">The Karabar housing commish </h2><img alt="IMG-1940" class="richtext-image full-width" height="792" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG-1940.width-800.jpg" width="800">In the late 1960s and early 70s, housing commission dwellings were popping in south Queanbeyan in droves, from Margaret street to Karri Crescent. Humble homes on giant blocks (by today&#x27;s standards), with heaps of room for the kids to kick a footy and roller skate down the driveway. The homes were built to five standardised floorplans, meaning your neighbours and nearby friends often live in the exact same layout as your own house. The houses originally had tiny kitchens with adjacent dining rooms, one bathroom and three shoebox-sized bedrooms.
