I’ll never forget the first time I saw a waterbed.I was seven, and my older and very cool teenage aunty Cathy, who wore bubblegum jeans and had the most gorgeous blonde home perm, had one installed in her bedroom at Nan’s house (she was still living with her parents at the time).It was 1984, and my little cousins and I were forced to wait outside while the glamorous black wooden base was lugged up the hallway by no less than 10 blokes.<img alt="waterbeds 4" class="richtext-image full-width" height="608" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/waterbeds_4.width-800.jpg" width="720">The bed base weighed an absolute tonne; it had to be strong to hold the weight of all the water, and it also contained a heater to keep the H2O warm.Next came the orange vinyl ‘bladder’; it fit perfectly in the rectangle frame and we stood outside Cathy’s bedroom window in awe as the team of installers fed the garden hose through the bedroom window and it started to fill it up.A couple of BMX bike rides and devon-and-sauce sandwiches later, my cousins and I returned to watch my aunty put a fitted sheet on the now full bladder.<img alt="waterbeds 6" class="richtext-image full-width" height="401" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/waterbeds_6.width-800.jpg" width="549">Then we were given the nod.We were allowed about six seconds to ‘try it’. It was like being given permission to bomb a pool or jump as high as you possibly could on the trampoline. My cousin Jeremy jumped on to the squishy, gurgling mattress and I followed suit. But when I jumped on, he went flying – all knees and elbows – into the wall. We were never allowed on it again.By the time my mum and dad got one in 1987, around one in four Australian homes had a waterbed. The technology was advancing at the rate of knots.<img alt="IMG_2726" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1018" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_2726.width-800.jpg" width="800">Mum and dad’s bed was ‘waveless’, so that when one person rolled over in the middle of the night, the other person didn’t go flying (like cousin Jeremy) or suffer extreme sea sickness.I thought mum and dad’s bed was so posh. It felt like a status symbol in our small hometown. It was eternally warm, had a sheepskin overlay on top of the bladder, and a black and purple silk patchwork doona cover (ah, the 80s).“It was the best bed I ever had,” my mum says.“It was the best mattress; it was so good for your back and like sleeping on air.”<img alt="waterbeds 3" class="richtext-image full-width" height="362" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/waterbeds_3.width-800.jpg" width="640">If it was so good, why did they get rid of it when they moved house in 1999?“It was so much effort and maintenance,” mum says.“If it sprung a leak, which it did sometimes, you’d wake up soaked and the carpet would be soaked. It just wasn’t worth the hassle anymore.”As the novelty wore off for mum and dad, it was wearing off world-wide too.<img alt="waterbeds 7" class="richtext-image full-width" height="615" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/waterbeds_7.width-800.png" width="634">At their peak in the late 1980s, waterbeds were a $2 billion business globally. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has one. That’s not to say that they’re gone altogether: Wai Wurri in Fyshwick still sells them, and you can order one online on Amazon.“No way,” says my aunty Cathy, now a grandmother, when I ask if she’d ever buy a waterbed again. It seems her glamorous bed was a bit like the bubble gum jeans and the home perm; a fad that should stay well and truly in the 80s.

Canberran Carly Stone admits she has the best job in the world.Her family owns the much-loved Bredbo Christmas Barn, and Carly spends several months of the year in the United States and Europe, shopping, quite literally, for Christmas decorations.
