It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. One of Canberra’s northernmost suburbs, Ngunnawal is a spacious, quiet area that’s popular with professionals and families. A quieter part of Gungahlin, the suburb of Palmerston is bounded by nature reserves on three sides. Tucked just inside the ACT/New South Wales border on Canberra’s most northern tip, Taylor is one of Canberra’s newest suburbs. Its first residents have already moved in and made the area home, living in a mix of brand new houses and townhouses, and the suburb continues to expand. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Only 15 minutes from the city, Throsby has a peaceful suburban vibe and plenty of wide, open spaces. Life here means being close to everything you need, but feels like a private sanctuary kitted out with excellent parks and amenities. Tucked away between two woodland nature reserves, you can expect to have birds, wallabies, and even bettongs as neighbours. This newer suburb is still growing, with local shops yet to come, but it’s only a short drive to Gungahlin Town Centre. The area is also well-serviced by schools in the neighbouring suburbs.

North Canberra

While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. Hackett shops has all of the basics plus Thai takeaway joint Siam Twist, while the shops and vast eateries of Dickson are a short trip away. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to facilities, with everything the buzzing city centre offers within easy walking distance, or the lively dining strip of Lonsdale Street in Braddon just a stone’s throw away. The light rail also runs right by, and there’s easy access to the rest of Canberra’s public transport network.

This charming little suburb may be right next to the New South Wales border, but it still feels like you’re in the centre of everything. The Watson Shops are a foodie’s delight, with delicious Filipino restaurant Lolo and Lola, and very popular cafe, The Knox Made in Watson, while the main shopping and dining hub of Dickson is a short drive away. It’s also a quick trip across Northbourne Avenue to the Capital Region Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Inhabited by students, families and retirees, Watson was once primarily houses but more townhouses and apartments have been added over the years.
