It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. With easy access to the city and Belconnen, excellent facilities, parks and good quality schools, Aranda is home to many established families but younger couples enjoy the lifestyle too.

There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Greater Queanbeyan

Looking for a rural lifestyle that’s still not too far away from town? Check out Burra, which sits south of Queanbeyan on the way to the Snowy Mountains. The main street is a foodie delight with home-baked sweets and hearty meals at Daughters at Hall Café, refined pub meals at the cosy 1882 Bar and Grill, delicious brunches and Bombolini doughnuts at Kynefin Café, plus a huge range of local wines and beers at Hops and Vine. Harrison, located just 10 kilometres north of the city, is an in-demand suburb, particularly for families wanting to live close to schools, playgrounds, the light rail network and local amenities. You can choose to live in a house, townhouse or apartment, which are all quite modern, and many of the apartments offer up strips of restaurants and other services on the ground floor. Just pop across Flemington Road for the Franklin shops, or five minutes up the road is the busy Gungahlin town centre. Canberra’s northernmost suburb, Jacka is one of Gungahlin’s newer areas. Tucked just inside the ACT/New South Wales border on Canberra’s most northern tip, Taylor is one of Canberra’s newest suburbs. Its first residents have already moved in and made the area home, living in a mix of brand new houses and townhouses, and the suburb continues to expand. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Only 15 minutes from the city, Throsby has a peaceful suburban vibe and plenty of wide, open spaces. This newer suburb is still growing, with local shops yet to come, but it’s only a short drive to Gungahlin Town Centre. The area is also well-serviced by schools in the neighbouring suburbs.

While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. Some houses even have nature right on their doorstep, backing onto Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Hackett shops has all of the basics plus Thai takeaway joint Siam Twist, while the shops and vast eateries of Dickson are a short trip away.
