It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Belconnen Westfield and Hawker Shops are also just a short drive away. Avid readers will love the suburb’s many street libraries, where you can browse, borrow and donate books.

Greater Queanbeyan

Looking for a rural lifestyle that’s still not too far away from town? Check out Burra, which sits south of Queanbeyan on the way to the Snowy Mountains. Live here and you can enjoy a serene lifestyle, huge blocks, and wide sweeping views. From Crestwood it’s only walking distance to Queanbeyan Pool, or you can drop into the Roos Club for a game of pool or to catch live sport. One of Canberra’s northernmost suburbs, Ngunnawal is a spacious, quiet area that’s popular with professionals and families. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.
