It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. Live here and you’ll wake up to a soundtrack of the birds who live in the suburb’s mature, native trees, whilst also having everything at your fingertips. It’s ultra-handy to the nearby Evatt shops, Belconnen Town Centre and University of Canberra, while William Palmer Park and the beautiful surrounds of Lake Ginninderra are also nearby. And getting into the city centre is just 20 minutes.

Tucked right in the middle of Belconnen is Melba, a quiet, leafy suburb with a strong sense of community. The suburb’s mix of houses and townhouses are in high demand, particularly with older couples and families, thanks to their mix of affordability and location. There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. The local Melba Shops have all of the basics, while it’s just a short trip to the shops and eateries of Belconnen Town Centre. Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. The local shops may be small but there’s plenty there, including a beauty salon, hairdresser, a couple of eateries, and Page Bottler, which is worth a visit even if you don’t live nearby, for their range of craft beers, local and boutique wines and small-batch spirits. Otherwise it’s only a few minutes’ drive to enjoy everything the Belconnen Town Centre has to offer. Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Belconnen Westfield and Hawker Shops are also just a short drive away. Avid readers will love the suburb’s many street libraries, where you can browse, borrow and donate books.

Greater Queanbeyan

Looking for a rural lifestyle that’s still not too far away from town? Check out Burra, which sits south of Queanbeyan on the way to the Snowy Mountains. Here you will predominantly find large homes, many with three or four bedrooms, so it’s a great place to buy a property that can fit a family. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Only 15 minutes from the city, Throsby has a peaceful suburban vibe and plenty of wide, open spaces. Life here means being close to everything you need, but feels like a private sanctuary kitted out with excellent parks and amenities. Tucked away between two woodland nature reserves, you can expect to have birds, wallabies, and even bettongs as neighbours. This newer suburb is still growing, with local shops yet to come, but it’s only a short drive to Gungahlin Town Centre. The area is also well-serviced by schools in the neighbouring suburbs.
