It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. Tucked right in the middle of Belconnen is Melba, a quiet, leafy suburb with a strong sense of community. The suburb’s mix of houses and townhouses are in high demand, particularly with older couples and families, thanks to their mix of affordability and location. There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. The local shops may be small but there’s plenty there, including a beauty salon, hairdresser, a couple of eateries, and Page Bottler, which is worth a visit even if you don’t live nearby, for their range of craft beers, local and boutique wines and small-batch spirits. Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Belconnen Westfield and Hawker Shops are also just a short drive away. Avid readers will love the suburb’s many street libraries, where you can browse, borrow and donate books.

The beautiful Palmerville Heritage Park is nearby, which is a great spot for a walk. Harrison, located just 10 kilometres north of the city, is an in-demand suburb, particularly for families wanting to live close to schools, playgrounds, the light rail network and local amenities. You can choose to live in a house, townhouse or apartment, which are all quite modern, and many of the apartments offer up strips of restaurants and other services on the ground floor. Just pop across Flemington Road for the Franklin shops, or five minutes up the road is the busy Gungahlin town centre. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Downer is an inner-north suburb that offers quiet residential living and is popular with retirees, couples and students. It’s right on the doorstep of the inner city hubs of Lyneham and Dickson, with access to great schools, transport options and shops nearby. And the formerly quiet Downer Shops have recently been revitalised, and now boast the popular Gang Gang Cafe, wellbeing studio Here, a vet hospital and a wine shop.

With leafy streets, an oval of bounding dogs, and a strong sense of community, the suburb of Hackett is somewhat of a hidden gem. While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. Some houses even have nature right on their doorstep, backing onto Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Hackett shops has all of the basics plus Thai takeaway joint Siam Twist, while the shops and vast eateries of Dickson are a short trip away. It’s also close to a great choice of schools and public transport.
