It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. One of Canberra’s northernmost suburbs, Ngunnawal is a spacious, quiet area that’s popular with professionals and families. Its first residents have already moved in and made the area home, living in a mix of brand new houses and townhouses, and the suburb continues to expand. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Only 15 minutes from the city, Throsby has a peaceful suburban vibe and plenty of wide, open spaces. Life here means being close to everything you need, but feels like a private sanctuary kitted out with excellent parks and amenities. Tucked away between two woodland nature reserves, you can expect to have birds, wallabies, and even bettongs as neighbours. This newer suburb is still growing, with local shops yet to come, but it’s only a short drive to Gungahlin Town Centre. The area is also well-serviced by schools in the neighbouring suburbs.

Hugging the north-eastern edge of Lake Burley Griffin, Acton is home to the National Museum of Australia and National Film and Sound Archive. Downer is an inner-north suburb that offers quiet residential living and is popular with retirees, couples and students. And the formerly quiet Downer Shops have recently been revitalised, and now boast the popular Gang Gang Cafe, wellbeing studio Here, a vet hospital and a wine shop.

With leafy streets, an oval of bounding dogs, and a strong sense of community, the suburb of Hackett is somewhat of a hidden gem. While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. Some houses even have nature right on their doorstep, backing onto Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Hackett shops has all of the basics plus Thai takeaway joint Siam Twist, while the shops and vast eateries of Dickson are a short trip away. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to facilities, with everything the buzzing city centre offers within easy walking distance, or the lively dining strip of Lonsdale Street in Braddon just a stone’s throw away. The light rail also runs right by, and there’s easy access to the rest of Canberra’s public transport network.

This charming little suburb may be right next to the New South Wales border, but it still feels like you’re in the centre of everything. The Watson Shops are a foodie’s delight, with delicious Filipino restaurant Lolo and Lola, and very popular cafe, The Knox Made in Watson, while the main shopping and dining hub of Dickson is a short drive away. It’s also a quick trip across Northbourne Avenue to the Capital Region Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Inhabited by students, families and retirees, Watson was once primarily houses but more townhouses and apartments have been added over the years.
