The suburb’s mix of houses and townhouses are in high demand, particularly with older couples and families, thanks to their mix of affordability and location. There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Looking for a rural lifestyle that’s still not too far away from town? Check out Burra, which sits south of Queanbeyan on the way to the Snowy Mountains. A quieter part of Gungahlin, the suburb of Palmerston is bounded by nature reserves on three sides. Tucked just inside the ACT/New South Wales border on Canberra’s most northern tip, Taylor is one of Canberra’s newest suburbs. Its first residents have already moved in and made the area home, living in a mix of brand new houses and townhouses, and the suburb continues to expand. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Only 15 minutes from the city, Throsby has a peaceful suburban vibe and plenty of wide, open spaces. Life here means being close to everything you need, but feels like a private sanctuary kitted out with excellent parks and amenities. Tucked away between two woodland nature reserves, you can expect to have birds, wallabies, and even bettongs as neighbours. This newer suburb is still growing, with local shops yet to come, but it’s only a short drive to Gungahlin Town Centre. The area is also well-serviced by schools in the neighbouring suburbs.

While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. The Watson Shops are a foodie’s delight, with delicious Filipino restaurant Lolo and Lola, and very popular cafe, The Knox Made in Watson, while the main shopping and dining hub of Dickson is a short drive away. It’s also a quick trip across Northbourne Avenue to the Capital Region Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Inhabited by students, families and retirees, Watson was once primarily houses but more townhouses and apartments have been added over the years.
