Paterson House

#soldbysally

When something is considered iconic it is usually to describe the beauty, influence and uniqueness that it has become known for.

The Paterson House is iconic. This is the house that has captured the attention of the community since its inception. Designed by acclaimed architect Enrico Taglietti in the late 60s for Canberran geophysicist and academic Mervyn Paterson and his Hungarian wife Katalin, the house was a bold and adventurous choice, showcasing Taglietti's signature sculptural, organic style.

Powerful and fortress like from the outside yet beautifully balanced with light and fine detailing inside the house delivers the perfect balance of privacy and openness.

Incredibly original and meticulously preserved, the inside of the house is a series of stepped and interlocking geometric spaces with large windows visually connecting the home with the surrounding native garden. The living space and kitchen is expansive and extends the full width of the house, linked by glass walls to the private terrace to the east. The terrace itself is a key feature, cleverly positioned to screen rooftops of neighbouring homes and frame views of the surrounding treetops and Black Mountain. From the rear the house is less dominating, open and intricate with a curved glazed wall and circular courtyard providing a winter suntrap surrounded by a garden that extends seamlessly into the bushland reserve.

Aranda is iconic, the suburb in Canberra that has retained its true bush setting and epitomises the lifestyle our capital has grown to love. The Paterson House links beautifully with the landscape, natural tones of grey cement and weathered timber sits comfortably in the Australian bushland setting.

The Paterson House is considered Taglietti's most important residential project in Canberra and has been listed on the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture. Our hope is that its next owner will honour and conserve the legacy for future generations to enjoy.
