One of my most favourite things about working in real estate is discovering older, architectural homes scattered amongst the suburbs. Aranda offers so many of these delights, interesting places that add so much to the streetscapes and tell the stories of our Canberra's design history.

The Aranda townhouses are no exception. Commissioned by the National Capital Development Commission in the 1960s, the initial control drawings were completed by renowned architect Dirk Bolt in 1966. Like many other suburban hubs of that time, the townhouses were designed in combination with the neighbourhood shopping centre. Taking advantage of the sloping site, Bolt stepped each of the four townhouse buildings in an east-west direction down the hill, with an off centre, 90-degree gabled roof which was repeated but in reverse for the neighbourhood centre.

As the development progressed architect, Rudi Krastins was engaged to complete the project. Working with the developers, Krastins made some alterations but kept with the overall design concept of Bolt's original drawings. The finished development is iconic, reflecting the modernist influence that was so strong in Canberra at this time.
