Hugging the north-eastern edge of Lake Burley Griffin, Acton is home to the National Museum of Australia and National Film and Sound Archive. Much of the suburb is dominated by the beautiful heritage buildings of the Australian National University, which explains the suburb’s particularly low median age. Then there’s New Acton, a hip arts precinct centred around the Nishi Building, an international award-winning architectural masterpiece (or eyesore, depending on who you ask) with its crazy timber facade and one of the most photographed staircases in Canberra. The area also has restaurants, hidden bars, funky hotels, cinemas and apartment-dwelling residents.
