It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. With easy access to the city and Belconnen, excellent facilities, parks and good quality schools, Aranda is home to many established families but younger couples enjoy the lifestyle too.

Mckellar in Belconnen is a peaceful, family-friendly suburb with rows of well-kept houses, and a good offering of schools nearby. Live here and you’ll wake up to a soundtrack of the birds who live in the suburb’s mature, native trees, whilst also having everything at your fingertips. It’s ultra-handy to the nearby Evatt shops, Belconnen Town Centre and University of Canberra, while William Palmer Park and the beautiful surrounds of Lake Ginninderra are also nearby. And getting into the city centre is just 20 minutes.

Tucked right in the middle of Belconnen is Melba, a quiet, leafy suburb with a strong sense of community. The suburb’s mix of houses and townhouses are in high demand, particularly with older couples and families, thanks to their mix of affordability and location. There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. The local Melba Shops have all of the basics, while it’s just a short trip to the shops and eateries of Belconnen Town Centre. Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. The local shops may be small but there’s plenty there, including a beauty salon, hairdresser, a couple of eateries, and Page Bottler, which is worth a visit even if you don’t live nearby, for their range of craft beers, local and boutique wines and small-batch spirits. Otherwise it’s only a few minutes’ drive to enjoy everything the Belconnen Town Centre has to offer. Lake Ginninderra is also not far away, and a beautiful spot for walking or cycling, or even catching up with friends for a meal at one of the lakeside dining spots.

Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Belconnen Westfield and Hawker Shops are also just a short drive away. Avid readers will love the suburb’s many street libraries, where you can browse, borrow and donate books.

Sitting on the northern edge of Belconnen is Spence, a quiet suburb with plenty of open, leafy spaces. The suburb has its own local shops with a grocer, bakery, butcher, and physio, while the shops and eateries of Belconnen Town Centre are less than a 10 minute drive away. The beautiful Palmerville Heritage Park is nearby, which is a great spot for a walk. And your four-legged friends are more than catered for with a great off-leash dog area - there’s even a box of dog balls supplied by members of the community. The quaint towns of Hall and Gold Creek are also just minutes away.

Looking for a rural lifestyle that’s still not too far away from town? Check out Burra, which sits south of Queanbeyan on the way to the Snowy Mountains. The main street is a foodie delight with home-baked sweets and hearty meals at Daughters at Hall Café, refined pub meals at the cosy 1882 Bar and Grill, delicious brunches and Bombolini doughnuts at Kynefin Café, plus a huge range of local wines and beers at Hops and Vine. Harrison, located just 10 kilometres north of the city, is an in-demand suburb, particularly for families wanting to live close to schools, playgrounds, the light rail network and local amenities. You can choose to live in a house, townhouse or apartment, which are all quite modern, and many of the apartments offer up strips of restaurants and other services on the ground floor. Just pop across Flemington Road for the Franklin shops, or five minutes up the road is the busy Gungahlin town centre. Canberra’s northernmost suburb, Jacka is one of Gungahlin’s newer areas. Master planned to incorporate sustainable design, housing blocks take advantage of solar access and rainwater tanks, meaning less ongoing energy bills. Its range of modern houses and townhouses are on the more affordable end of the spectrum, making it a popular spot for families and younger people entering the property market. Living here you have easy access to good schools, plus the shops and eateries of Gungahlin Town Centre, plus the light rail network, are only a short drive away.

A shopping centre, playgrounds, walking trails, ponds, a group centre and community facilities are all on the way, whilst Gungahlin Town Centre is just a short drive away.

One of Canberra’s northernmost suburbs, Ngunnawal is a spacious, quiet area that’s popular with professionals and families. Kids are well looked after thanks to great schools nearby and plenty of open spaces and playgrounds to run around. The Ngunnawal Shopping Centre has you covered for the basics, or its a quick drive to the shops, cafes, restaurants and bars in Gungahlin or Belconnen. Even the city is only 12 kilometres away.

Want to live in a stylish home with enough space for a big garden, outdoor dining area or even a pizza oven? Nicholls could be the suburb for you. Here you’ll find a great range of houses, including the prestigious homes of Harcourt Hill, plus excellent walking tracks and paths right around the suburb. There’s a local shopping centre for all the basics, or it’s only two kilometres to Gungahlin Town Centre. Plus Nicholls is also home to the quaint Gold Creek Village, which has Cockington Green, the National Dinosaur Museum, the Australian Reptile Centre and old-English style pub The George Harcourt Inn, as well as several specialty shops and cafes. And fancy yourself as a golfer? There are not one but two golf courses in Nicholls.

A quieter part of Gungahlin, the suburb of Palmerston is bounded by nature reserves on three sides. With a mix of young families and retirees, you’ll find larger blocks and wider roads than some of the area’s newer suburbs. In the middle of its mix of houses and townhouses is a small local shops with all the basics and a medical centre, or it’s just a short drive to everything you could need at the Gungahlin Town Centre.

Tucked just inside the ACT/New South Wales border on Canberra’s most northern tip, Taylor is one of Canberra’s newest suburbs. Its first residents have already moved in and made the area home, living in a mix of brand new houses and townhouses, and the suburb continues to expand. Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Only 15 minutes from the city, Throsby has a peaceful suburban vibe and plenty of wide, open spaces. Life here means being close to everything you need, but feels like a private sanctuary kitted out with excellent parks and amenities. Tucked away between two woodland nature reserves, you can expect to have birds, wallabies, and even bettongs as neighbours. This newer suburb is still growing, with local shops yet to come, but it’s only a short drive to Gungahlin Town Centre. The area is also well-serviced by schools in the neighbouring suburbs.

Hugging the north-eastern edge of Lake Burley Griffin, Acton is home to the National Museum of Australia and National Film and Sound Archive. Much of the suburb is dominated by the beautiful heritage buildings of the Australian National University, which explains the suburb’s particularly low median age. Living in Braddon means Canberra’s hippest dining strip Lonsdale Street is right on your doorstep, with funky bars, stylish boutiques, award-winning eateries, theatres, cafes, coffee roasteries and even a brewery. Home to a wide range of new multi-million dollar developments, Braddon is predominantly filled with apartments and townhouses, with a few beautiful older homes nestled in the leafy back streets. The suburb is also just a stone’s throw from the Canberra Centre, cinemas, theatres, plus more eateries, bars and nightlife.

Sitting in an enviable position nestled between the base of Mount Ainslie, Lake Burley Griffin and the city centre, is the beautiful, leafy suburb of Campbell. While it’s one of Canberra’s older suburbs, home to predominantly families and couples of all ages, its an area that’s seen major redevelopment over recent years. The lake end of the suburb is now filled with a range of stylish, high density developments, which also boast a top notch array of eateries including Teddy Pickers, The Pedlar, and Lanterne Rooms. In the middle of the suburb is the quiet Campbell shops, with a grocer, bakery, pharmacy and a handful of eateries, including phenomenal French food at Les Bistronomes. Living in Campbell, it’s only a short walk away to the city centre, Lake Burley Griffin, Mount Ainslie and the Australian War Memorial.

Affectionately known as Civic, Canberra’s city centre is filled with a growing mix of shopping, restaurants, nightlight, theatres, transport hubs and lush parks. If you work in the city, it’s just a quick walk into the office, and you’re spoilt for choice with exceptional coffee along the way. Great schools can also be found in the surrounding suburbs.

Looking for leafy streets, easy access to public transport and a particularly good eat street? Dickson may be the suburb for you. With a light rail interchange and several bus stops right there, getting to work, school or wherever you need to go is easy. But there’s plenty to explore within the suburb itself. The Dickson shops have everything you could need, with even more shops currently under development. Just around the corner is where things get delicious, with Canberra’s ‘China Town’ restaurant strip alongside a great selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs. You can find plenty of older homes, surrounded by greenery on substantial blocks, as well as a smattering of brand new apartment developments.

Downer is an inner-north suburb that offers quiet residential living and is popular with retirees, couples and students. It’s right on the doorstep of the inner city hubs of Lyneham and Dickson, with access to great schools, transport options and shops nearby. And the formerly quiet Downer Shops have recently been revitalised, and now boast the popular Gang Gang Cafe, wellbeing studio Here, a vet hospital and a wine shop.

With leafy streets, an oval of bounding dogs, and a strong sense of community, the suburb of Hackett is somewhat of a hidden gem. While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. Some houses even have nature right on their doorstep, backing onto Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Hackett shops has all of the basics plus Thai takeaway joint Siam Twist, while the shops and vast eateries of Dickson are a short trip away. It’s also close to a great choice of schools and public transport.

With beautiful leafy streets, great cycle paths, proximity to the city and genuinely cool local shops, Lyneham is one sought-after suburb. It’s an area synonymous with art, and you can lap up the creative vibes at Tilley’s Devine Café Gallery, known for its all-dining and jazz nights, or The Front, with its live music, art exhibitions and delicious brunches. A mix of standalone houses, townhouses and apartments, Lyneham residents have easy access to three schools, and to the light rail network which runs directly past on Northbourne Avenue.
