Belconnen

It’s one of the closest suburbs to the CBD but you could easily not know Aranda exists. Hidden in a leafy pocket at the foot of Black Mountain, living here means you can enjoy all the luxuries of urban living but feel like you’re miles away from anything. The once-derelict Aranda shops are now a bustling community with a coffee roastery, cafe, bar and a boutique gift shop, or it’s not far to the Jamison Shopping Centre at Macquarie. With easy access to the city and Belconnen, excellent facilities, parks and good quality schools, Aranda is home to many established families but younger couples enjoy the lifestyle too.

Life here means you can pop out for rare bird spotting at West Belconnen Pond, nip down to the Dunlop shops which are slated for an upgrade in 2020, or take the kids to one of the eight playgrounds in the suburb. Here you’ll find a median house price which is slightly below the ACT average, making it an appealing suburb for investors and those looking to enter the property market for the first time. Kids can enjoy the Community Nature Play Park, which was built using timber from historic Tharwa Bridge and designed with help from University of Canberra landscape architecture students. After many years of planning, Giralang Shops has a supermarket, retailers and apartments in the works, but shopping hubs at Crace, Kaleen or Belconnen Town Centre aren’t far away.

Live in the Belconnen suburb of Hawker and you’ll likely enjoy treetop views from your windows—some elevated blocks get to lap up vast vistas across Belconnen. It has quite a thriving local shopping precinct, with a wide range of shops, services and eateries - including the popular RockSalt restaurant. Full of convenience, Higgins is a leafy suburb nestled in Belconnen. Macgregor is a quiet suburb in Canberra’s far west that offers sweeping views of the Brindabellas and Ginninderra Creek. It’s an area popular with young families thanks to its proximity to nature as well as Belconnen Town Centre, schools, shops, and public transport. In the older part of Macgregor, you’ll find houses on large, leafy blocks, or the newer housing developments are well-suited to first home buyers and investors. There’s also the smaller Macquarie Shops on the other side of the suburb, or it’s a quick drive to Belconnen Town Centre.

Looking for a quiet, suburban lifestyle without giving up on convenience? Mckellar in Belconnen is a peaceful, family-friendly suburb with rows of well-kept houses, and a good offering of schools nearby. Live here and you’ll wake up to a soundtrack of the birds who live in the suburb’s mature, native trees, whilst also having everything at your fingertips. It’s ultra-handy to the nearby Evatt shops, Belconnen Town Centre and University of Canberra, while William Palmer Park and the beautiful surrounds of Lake Ginninderra are also nearby. And getting into the city centre is just 20 minutes.

McKellar

Tucked right in the middle of Belconnen is Melba, a quiet, leafy suburb with a strong sense of community. The suburb’s mix of houses and townhouses are in high demand, particularly with older couples and families, thanks to their mix of affordability and location. There are three schools within the suburb, and residents get to enjoy well-maintained sporting ovals and facilities, plus easy access to major arterial roads and public transport. The local Melba Shops have all of the basics, while it’s just a short trip to the shops and eateries of Belconnen Town Centre. Melba is also positioned right at the foot of Mount Rogers, which means it’s easy to pop out and enjoy some fresh air and impressive views on the nature trails.

Just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Page is a quiet, leafy suburb that scores well on both convenience and affordability. The local shops may be small but there’s plenty there, including a beauty salon, hairdresser, a couple of eateries, and Page Bottler, which is worth a visit even if you don’t live nearby, for their range of craft beers, local and boutique wines and small-batch spirits. Otherwise it’s only a few minutes’ drive to enjoy everything the Belconnen Town Centre has to offer. Lake Ginninderra is also not far away, and a beautiful spot for walking or cycling, or even catching up with friends for a meal at one of the lakeside dining spots.

Just 15 minutes from the city with a lower than average (though steadily rising) median house price, Scullin is an increasingly sought-after suburb for Canberra families and individuals. The Scullin Shops have been reinvigorated and are home to a yoga studio, eateries, and other retailers including one of Canberra’s most loved ‘Another Chance’ Op Shops. Belconnen Westfield and Hawker Shops are also just a short drive away. Avid readers will love the suburb’s many street libraries, where you can browse, borrow and donate books.

Sitting on the northern edge of Belconnen is Spence, a quiet suburb with plenty of open, leafy spaces. The suburb has its own local shops with a grocer, bakery, butcher, and physio, while the shops and eateries of Belconnen Town Centre are less than a 10 minute drive away. The beautiful Palmerville Heritage Park is nearby, which is a great spot for a walk. And your four-legged friends are more than catered for with a great off-leash dog area - there’s even a box of dog balls supplied by members of the community. The quaint towns of Hall and Gold Creek are also just minutes away.

Greater Queanbeyan

Looking for a rural lifestyle that’s still not too far away from town? Check out Burra, which sits south of Queanbeyan on the way to the Snowy Mountains. From Crestwood it’s only walking distance to Queanbeyan Pool, or you can drop into the Roos Club for a game of pool or to catch live sport. Googong is Queanbeyan’s newer region, with the first residents only moving in back in 2014. It’s an area loved by families for its kid-friendly environment, community focus and affordable modern homes. There’s the Googong North Village Centre for your shopping needs, while Queanbeyan town centre isn’t far away. And there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, including the beautiful Googong Dam, which is a great spot for bushwalking, mountain bike riding, sailing and even fishing. The suburb is only five minutes from all the shops, eateries and facilities of Queanbeyan, or an easy 20 minute drive into Canberra, and also sits in the enviable spot of being on the way to the south coast.

Amaroo means ‘beautiful place’ and that phrase certainly rings true in this well-established Gungahlin suburb. Here you will predominantly find large homes, many with three or four bedrooms, so it’s a great place to buy a property that can fit a family. Wrapped around the hustle and bustle of Gungahlin Town Centre, living in Gungahlin means access to the light rail network for a quick and comfortable trip to the city centre. But why head to the city when you have so many shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and soon to be built 8 cinema complex right on your doorstep? You can tuck into fried chicken and whiskey at Young and Frisky, sip on Italian-style coffee and indulge in petite gateaux at Le Bon Melange, or snap photos of your rainbow waffles at Sunday in Canberra, plus burger favourite Grease Monkey is also opening soon. Gungahlin has a younger median population, who live in a mix of mostly modern apartments and homes.

Want to live less than 15 kilometres from the city centre but enjoy an idyllic country lifestyle? The historic village of Hall, just inside the ACT/NSW border, is a quaint town that’s home to just under 300 people. Live here and you could walk to the very popular Hall Village Markets, which attract people from all over town. The main street is a foodie delight with home-baked sweets and hearty meals at Daughters at Hall Café, refined pub meals at the cosy 1882 Bar and Grill, delicious brunches and Bombolini doughnuts at Kynefin Café, plus a huge range of local wines and beers at Hops and Vine. A host of great schools are just a short distance away. Plus, you’re well on your way to the heart of Canberra wine country, which is just up the highway.

Harrison, located just 10 kilometres north of the city, is an in-demand suburb, particularly for families wanting to live close to schools, playgrounds, the light rail network and local amenities. You can choose to live in a house, townhouse or apartment, which are all quite modern, and many of the apartments offer up strips of restaurants and other services on the ground floor. Just pop across Flemington Road for the Franklin shops, or five minutes up the road is the busy Gungahlin town centre. And you’re spoilt for choice if you like keeping active, with plenty of gyms in the area plus playing fields, and ample places to go hiking not far away.

Taylor already has its own primary school, and the Taylor Adventure Playground is there to keep the kids entertained. There are plans to build a local shopping centre, but until then, there are plenty of facilities in the neighbouring suburbs and it’s only four kilometres into the lively Gungahlin Town Centre and light rail network.

Hugging the north-eastern edge of Lake Burley Griffin, Acton is home to the National Museum of Australia and National Film and Sound Archive. Downer is an inner-north suburb that offers quiet residential living and is popular with retirees, couples and students.
