While it’s one of Canberra’s older suburbs, home to predominantly families and couples of all ages, its an area that’s seen major redevelopment over recent years. The lake end of the suburb is now filled with a range of stylish, high density developments, which also boast a top notch array of eateries including Teddy Pickers, The Pedlar, and Lanterne Rooms. In the middle of the suburb is the quiet Campbell shops, with a grocer, bakery, pharmacy and a handful of eateries, including phenomenal French food at Les Bistronomes. Living in Campbell, it’s only a short walk away to the city centre, Lake Burley Griffin, Mount Ainslie and the Australian War Memorial.

Just around the corner is where things get delicious, with Canberra’s ‘China Town’ restaurant strip alongside a great selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs. You can find plenty of older homes, surrounded by greenery on substantial blocks, as well as a smattering of brand new apartment developments.

Dickson

Downer is an inner-north suburb that offers quiet residential living and is popular with retirees, couples and students. It’s right on the doorstep of the inner city hubs of Lyneham and Dickson, with access to great schools, transport options and shops nearby. And the formerly quiet Downer Shops have recently been revitalised, and now boast the popular Gang Gang Cafe, wellbeing studio Here, a vet hospital and a wine shop.

With leafy streets, an oval of bounding dogs, and a strong sense of community, the suburb of Hackett is somewhat of a hidden gem. While it sits only six kilometres from the city, you’ll feel like you’re miles away thanks to plenty of mature trees and wide open spaces. Some houses even have nature right on their doorstep, backing onto Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Hackett shops has all of the basics plus Thai takeaway joint Siam Twist, while the shops and vast eateries of Dickson are a short trip away. It’s also close to a great choice of schools and public transport.

With beautiful leafy streets, great cycle paths, proximity to the city and genuinely cool local shops, Lyneham is one sought-after suburb. It’s an area synonymous with art, and you can lap up the creative vibes at Tilley’s Devine Café Gallery, known for its all-dining and jazz nights, or The Front, with its live music, art exhibitions and delicious brunches. A mix of standalone houses, townhouses and apartments, Lyneham residents have easy access to three schools, and to the light rail network which runs directly past on Northbourne Avenue.

Perched right on the city fringe, Reid is one of Canberra’s oldest suburbs. Living here means you get to enjoy leafy, tree-lined streets and large house blocks - an entire section of the suburb has even been heritage listed to protect the unique architecture of the homes in the area. It’s a short walk into the buzzing city centre, or even the restaurants and bars of the new Campbell 5 precinct or Braddon’s Lonsdale Street. And even though you’re right in the heart of town, it’s not hard to escape to nature - it’s walking distance to Mt Ainslie, where if you make the trip up, you’re treated to spectacular panoramic views of the nation’s capital.
