In every real estate agency in Canberra, at every level, women are powering the success of their teams, their individual offices and their broader agencies.To celebrate International Women’s Day, we caught up with five women in very different roles within the industry, to chat about what they love about their role and the impact they’re keen to have every single day.<h3 data-block-key="fnbt">Georgie Parry</h3><h4 data-block-key="d1dsj">General Manager – Agent &amp; Customer Experience, Ray White Canberra</h4><img alt="Georgie (1) (1)" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1199" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Georgie_1_1.width-800.jpg" width="800">“When I started in real estate over 10 years ago, it felt like a man&#x27;s game,” Georgie says.“Typically, men ran the businesses I have been a part of, and it was rare to see women hold leadership roles.”But things are different in 2024.“I feel fortunate to be part of the leadership team at Ray White Canberra, which is made up of so many inspiring females. I think women in leadership roles provide exceptional mentorship, authenticity, vulnerability, and a genuine passion to see others grow and flourish.”While Georgie’s great at executing on planned work, a huge part of what she does is responsive to the needs of the business. As a GM, Georgie leads a team of 10, but her days can be “pretty random”.“I could be organising an event, assisting our sales team with marketing, or, when I get the opportunity, I love to brainstorm and implement ways to improve my department to better service our team and their clients,” she says.“Our values at Ray White Canberra sum up most of the skills I think are essential in this industry: humility, teamwork, reliability, and customer first. But you also need a good sense of humour and organisational skills, of course.”Do we need more women in the property industry?“We need more women in every industry, at every level, and the property industry is no different,” Georgie says.“Women in property bring unique skills to the industry, in particular empathy, great attention to detail, and a caring approach.”<h3 data-block-key="5mbi6">Amanda Wilson</h3><h4 data-block-key="4865e">Executive Assistant to Col McIntyre, McIntyre Property</h4><img alt="Amanda Wilson Photo" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1518" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Amanda_Wilson_Photo.width-800.jpg" width="800">What attracted you to the property industry?I was introduced to the real estate industry by a family friend who was looking for administration staff at a small boutique agency in 2001. So 23 years ago! I quickly fell in love with all things property — I loved the different style of homes, the varied floorplans, and the perks and quirks of each Canberra suburb.What would you like to do next?I’ve been in the industry now for many years, and I’ve been able to adjust my roles through marriage, moving house and having a family. Becoming a sales agent is of interest but will be in the future for me as my children are still young. For the moment, I love encouraging and motivating our current sales team and riding the waves of the market alongside them.What surprised you most about the industry when you joined McIntyre?The market was heating up just as I started and it was full on from the get-go. Just how I like it.<h3 data-block-key="2ioln">Natalie Shawcross</h3><h4 data-block-key="5bo2q">Director – Commercial, VERV Property</h4><img alt="Natalie (1)" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Natalie_1.width-800.jpg" width="800">From her start as a receptionist at a shopping centre in Cairns to now owning a boutique real estate agency in Canberra, there isn’t much Natalie Shawcross hasn’t done in two decades in the commercial property space.“I’ve worked as a commercial property manager in Canberra for 17 years,” Natalie says.“Three years ago, I opened VERV Property with Jason Roses, which is definitely a highlight of my career.”An ability to listen and “having an excellent imagination” are the skills that commercial property managers need to succeed in their roles, Natalie says.“You can’t just think about what a property is – you need to be able to think about what it could be,” she says.“Commercial property managers and agents are able to help realise a vision for a property while continuing to increase the value of the asset.“You also need great listening skills – communication is really key. Tenants and lessors obviously each have a different viewpoint, so it’s important to understand each and find the middle ground.”She admits it’s a cliche, but no two days are the same for Natalie.“I love everything about my job,” she says.“I love helping people achieve their goals – whether that’s assisting an investor to grow their portfolio or assisting a tenant to secure their first commercial premises. I also love owning my own business – the team Jason and I have built at VERV is second to none.”What are the challenges of working on the commercial side of property?“That’s a tough one – it’s all I’ve ever known,” Natalie laughs.“I haven’t worked on the residential side of sales or property management, so I don’t have anything to compare it to.“I love that the commercial real estate industry in Canberra is a supportive community – agents and property managers assist each other in providing market evidence and other information.”<h3 data-block-key="4ut5g">Zoe Wheelhouse</h3><h4 data-block-key="44a2b">Head of Property Management / New Relationships Manager, Luton</h4><img alt="Zoe Wheelhouse Image 2" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Zoe_Wheelhouse_Image_2.width-800.jpg" width="800">Why does property management attract more women?We’re naturally nurturing and have an ability to be empathetic while also being professional.What&#x27;s something people don&#x27;t know about property management?It’s more than just a job. Property management has amazing career progression, from entry level all the way to business partnership.What do you love about your role?All the people I get to meet and work with. Having an investment property is a huge achievement and being able to assist people through the journey is what drives my work, every day.What skills do you need to succeed in property management?Great communication, time management, a proactive approach and a love for customer service.<h3 data-block-key="fkp87">Karen Wiley</h3><h4 data-block-key="a9o7b">Senior Accounts &amp; Administration Manager, LJ Hooker Canberra City</h4><img alt="Karen_Headshot" class="richtext-image full-width" height="873" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Karen_Headshot.width-800.jpg" width="800">Without people like Karen – whose superpower is numbers – the industry would come to a halt. On any given day, Karen is calculating and paying agent commissions and bonuses, ensuring property settlements are processed on time, and managing all aspects of her office’s compliance – particularly with regard to trust accounting.Karen joined LJ Hooker in 2013 as the accountant for LJ Hooker Projects, and in 2018 also took on responsibility for managing the accounting for LJ Hooker Canberra City’s residential and property management areas. In the past couple of years, she helped navigate the sale of a portion of a business, and the establishment of four new businesses under the LJ Hooker banner, all of which she now helps manage the accounts for.“Being in accounts is pretty much like being on a treadmill which resets every month,” Karen says.“There are compulsory monthly deadlines which have to be met and routine tasks that have to be adhered to daily.“But no day is ‘standard’ – you generally come in determined to tackle A, B and C and by the time you leave for the day sometimes you have encountered so many curveballs you’d be lucky to get past Task B.”For those considering a career as an accountant in the property industry, she says “bring your passion for math and numbers”.“It’s a slightly different form of accounting as we know it,” Karen says.“The basic principles of my degree and CPA still apply but the work is different and very compliance driven.“I’ve had the privilege of working in the public and not-for-profit sectors, neither of which were quite like this role.“I think my advice to anyone joining this industry is to be strong and confident enough to deal with the very, very large number of Alpha personalities that this industry attracts and needs.”

When it comes to the property industry, Naomi says it’s a sector that needs to do a complete 180 and look forward, rather than backward.“The property industry needs to be forward-focused,” she says.“And it needs to think about where it&#x27;s going – not about where it&#x27;s come from. “There’s lots of disruption happening. And there’s one thing that will protect you from disruption. People need nurturing. And I&#x27;m not talking about running a kindergarten. But they need to be nurtured, rather than just lead. “They need to believe and feel a part of something bigger than themselves. And if we’re going to be future-focused in the property industry, then we really need to talk about the role that people play. And how we create community within our workplaces.”A serial investor, Naomi looks for one thing in the companies she backs.“It&#x27;s always about the person,” she says.“It&#x27;s never about the business. And it&#x27;s always about their ability to understand the impact they&#x27;re having. Is purpose driving them?“I have to be able to get along with them.
