Recent events have certainly shown the importance of caring for each other as a community.There are many positive stories of how neighbours and even competing businesses are working together to help those who are more at risk, having to quarantine, or struggling to make ends meet during COVID.This hasn’t escaped our attention at Zango – as a locally owned business, doing right by our community is a value that’s near to our hearts. 1940s Ainslie time warp hits the market

A few weeks ago we shared the <a href="https://zango.com.au/news/adam-headings-generous-gift-to-save-his-brothers-life/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">heart warming story</a> of local real estate agent, <a href="/agents/adam-heading/">Adam Heading</a>, and his generous donation to save his brother Marc. After being diagnosed with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) at 9 years old which caused complete renal failure, Marc is now 41 and has survived thanks to kidney donations from his father, mother, and now brother. We are thrilled to report that Adam’s and Marc’s surgery was a huge success, and Adam is already back at work – just in time to break a suburb record for his client in Richardson. Recounting his experience in the Brisbane hospital, Adam says “On the Tuesday of the surgery I was supposed to go in first with Marc to follow. However, when they did an ultrasound they couldn’t find one of his old kidneys from 30 years ago which needed to be removed. So after a 6 hour operation to find and remove it, I went under and then we were both moved to recovery.<img alt="Zango Website_News Articles_Hero &amp; Sub Image_HH3.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="530" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Zango_Website_News_Articles_Hero__Sub_Image_HH.width-800.jpg" width="800">“It went really, really well – all of his levels are fantastic at the moment, and it was amazing to watch him be able to have an extra large Starbucks coffee! That’s something we take for granted, but it was the first time he could have that much liquid in nearly 3 years. That picture alone made it all worthwhile for me.”Adam remained in recovery for 2 days before flying back to Canberra on the Friday. “It has been a few weeks and I’m still sore and can’t lift anything over 5kg for a while. I also get fatigued more quickly as the stitches are healing. But it’s remarkable to see how much medicine has advanced. 30 years ago, my dad had 76 staples from his belly button to his spine. Now, the same surgery is considered keyhole surgery and there are no external stitches.”Of his recent <a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/80-fullerton-richardson-act-2905-42387/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">record-breaking sale in Richardson</a>, Adam says he is delighted for the vendor and buyer. “It was a fantastic result; the previous suburb record was $815,000 for a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom on a 1,033sqm block. This property was a 3 bedroom plus study with 1 bathroom and sold for $824,000. Our vendors and the couple who bought it were over the moon. “It definitely shows how much the local market has grown. Be it the Tuggeranong, Belconnen or Queanbeyan regions – people realise how central they are and that they can be an unbelievable place to live in terms of amenities and proximity to the city. Throughout the surgery I don’t think we really stopped – we were always on our laptops and phones organising new listings and inspections, but that’s the way we love it.”Adam is working with the Canberra Raiders to organise an auction date for a collection of donated memorabilia which will go towards supporting Marc in his recovery over the next few months. Back to work in record time

While many of us headed off for another day at work last Tuesday, Queanbeyan local and founder of <a href="https://zango.com.au/agencies/heading-home-properties/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Heading Home Properties</a> – <a href="https://zango.com.au/agents/adam-heading/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Adam Heading</a> – was awaiting surgery in a Brisbane hospital.It’s an operation he has somewhat anticipated for the past 30 years, after his brother Marc was diagnosed with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) at 9 years old. So Marc is once again in kidney failure, and Adam has stepped up to donate one of his.Speaking from his hotel room on the Gold Coast as he awaited surgery, Adam says “The doctor tells us we’re as close a match as you could be which is promising. There’s always a risk that it won’t take, but my brother needs a break so I am more than happy to help.“Marc’s been in renal failure for a couple of years now and we would have done the surgery sooner, but he developed a cancer in his mouth and we had to wait until he was clear of it.“He has always had to take anti-rejection pills throughout the day, and weigh everything he eats to check for water content. Right now, he can only drink 250ml of water a day – including what’s naturally in food. This is the same as a single cup of coffee, which would be impossible for most of us to do.”Living life to the full isn’t something that has escaped Adam – he left a decade-long career in the public service to launch his own real estate business almost 3 years ago.<img alt="Zango Website_News Articles_Hero &amp; Sub Image7.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="500" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Zango_Website_News_Articles_Hero__Sub_Image7_L.width-800.jpg" width="800">“I love buying and selling properties, but wasn’t very happy with the service I received from some agents. So, I decided to start my own agency to provide a more down to earth service.“Now it’s very much a family business with my partner Danielle coming on board as an agent. Adam Heading’s generous gift to save his brother’s life

As survival stories go, ice hockey in Canberra is right up there as participation in the National League was threatened a number of times.The Canberra Knights, established in 1981, had several rocky years before folding in 2014, only to be replaced by the CBR Brave.The Brave, led by three of the city’s most progressive businessmen – Peter Chamberlain, Jamie Wilson and Warren Apps – emerged from these humble beginnings to be one of Canberra’s most successful sporting teams.The bold ‘can do’ approach was rewarded in 2018 when the Brave became the first Canberra team to win the Australian Ice Hockey League title.They are the ninth most successful team in Australasia.In 2019, the Brave transitioned to a Canberra Cavalry/Brave management structure.Things initially progressed well, but along came the bushfires, smoke haze, then COVID-19 to seriously impact both the Brave and the Cavalry. These unforeseen factors, along with the difficulties of managing through this challenging period, hit the financial bottom line hard and led to the demise of joint management.The Cavalry collapsed, leaving the Brave in a difficult position.This year, the Cavalry secured new owners.The Brave are under a new management structure, with Sunny Singh taking over from Dan Amodio as the CEO.To further bolster the Brave’s long-term viability, the three businessmen, who were instrumental in establishing the success of the franchise, have returned in an advisory capacity to strengthen the club’s sustainability.Warren Apps says advice is being offered around management issues such as links to the business community and cost management.“We’re assisting with sponsors, and thankfully, there is a strong sponsorship base. We are there to support Sunny, who is a very capable CEO and is doing a great job,” he says.Sunny Singh says the new structure aims to ensure the long-term future of the team and everyone’s pitching in to help.“The former Brave management offered to provide guidance around the current season as well as assisting us to ensure that we can transition to a new management structure,” Sunny says.“Their guidance is invaluable and will help us deliver a successful season while building a plan that ensures the Brave continues to remain a dominant force in the Australian Ice Hockey League.”The first hurdle has been crossed, with the team taking part in the new-look NSW/ACT-based competition this season.The season effectively sees the Brave playing against NSW teams. This means the team has reduced costs with no flights and no imports. And the team is very much a local team, which has gained immediate success.
