The Blackshaws’ Red Hill estate sells for $6.4 million in a Zango exclusive

There’s selling houses, and then there’s selling the house of Peter Blackshaw, former Canberra real estate guru and digital advertising entrepreneur.

Agents Bill Lyristakis, from Berkely, and Stephen Thomson, from LJ Hooker Manuka - who’d both previously worked for Peter Blackshaw - treated their former boss “like any other client” when they took on the sale of the home. The result was a $6.4m price tag for the one-acre property at 18 Monaro Crescent, Red Hill.

“Peter absolutely let us do our jobs and took our advice when we gave it,” sales agent Stephen Thomson said.

That advice included listing the “beautiful but comfortable” home exclusively on Zango. Peter, a minority shareholder in Zango, was more than happy to forego other real estate websites and list exclusively on the only Canberra-owned property portal.

“I believed we’d get the coverage we wanted and I didn’t feel the need to waste money,” Peter says.

“Serious buyers go to Zango.

“There’s a high percentage of properties listed on Zango that just aren’t listed anywhere else.

“We had huge enquiry and ended up with six registered bidders. You can’t want for more than that.

“This demonstrates you don’t need to spend a fortune advertising your property on the internet to get a great result.”

Peter and Andrea Blackshaw and their children moved into 18 Monaro Crescent in 1992, at a purchase price of $800,000. The property had once been owned by Peter’s father. The Blackshaws’ loved the “park-like” block so much they stayed for three decades.

“We honestly didn’t want to sell it - we have a strong emotional attachment to it,” Peter says.

“For my family it was the ideal house in terms of proximity to everything that was Canberra for us - the grammar schools, Manuka.

“But we’re spending a lot of time travelling now and have downsized to an apartment at the [Kingston] foreshore, so it was time.”

Peter started a career in real estate in Canberra in the 1980s, building the Blackshaw empire until his retirement in 2007. He was the founder of a digital property platform in Canberra in the early 2000s, which he sold in 2014, and today has a stake in Zango.

He said the satisfying result on 18 Monaro Crescent came from his two agents but also from friend, former colleague and “exceptional auctioneer” Peter Walker from Ray White Canberra.

“Peter did a really fantastic job, he’s done thousands of auctions and by his own admission, this was one of the best,” Peter says.

“A big shout out Bill, Stephen and Peter, I’m so grateful for their efforts.”

According to Stephen Thomson, the “estate-like” grounds of the property pushed the price over the $6 million mark.

“It’s like being out in the country in the middle of the most valuable area of Canberra,” he says.

“It’s an oasis to come home to, and our six bidders were all people that recognised the lifestyle this home would afford.”
