<p data-block-key="155w5">It’s one of a handful of areas that I literally crane my neck to stare at every time I drive past.</p><p data-block-key="2ri17">At the far end of Canberra Avenue, at the axis of Empire Circuit, is the most gorgeous cluster of 1930s-designed buildings known as the Forrest Fire Station precinct.</p><img alt="33-canberra-avenue-forrest-act-2603-108284-image-0-20240917033237996150-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/33-canberra-avenue-forrest-act-2603-108284-ima.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="eipj1">Built in 1939, the fire station and the seven double-brick buildings surrounding it are a stunning example of interwar functionalist architecture. Their narrow windows, small cantilevered balconies and interlocking horizontal and vertical elements were the design of then government architects E H Henderson and Cuthbert Whitley.</p><p data-block-key="cnf5c">Forrest Fire Station was built to support the main ACT Fire Station and serviced the inner south until 1983. It is now home to the Canberra Fire Museum.</p><img alt="Forrest Fire Station" class="richtext-image full-width" height="543" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Forrest_Fire_Station.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9a5n2">The other precinct buildings, originally built as government residences, have been home to an assortment of professional services, creative agencies, and health and wellness businesses over the past 85 years.</p><p data-block-key="fkhm9">And now <a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/33-canberra-avenue-forrest-act-2603-108284/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">one of the buildings within the fire station precinct</a> is seeking a new owner.</p><p data-block-key="5gs92">Number 33 Canberra Avenue – formerly known as Block 3, Section 35 Canberra Avenue – hit the market this week with a price tag of $1.7 million. Canberra's most sought after Airbnb is actually in ... Higgins?!

<p data-block-key="tja1i">It’s hard to imagine a time when “no-one wanted to buy a house in Kingston” but Rob Painter remembers it well.</p><p data-block-key="35ojg">It was the late 1970s: the inner south suburb was packed with students and hippies, living in run-down houses that had been zoned for redevelopment and allowed to deteriorate by developers. </p><img alt="IMG_7160" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1132" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7160.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9c9dh">Young Canberrans in flares, patterned shirts and long hair walked and cycled the streets, and Green Square was the place to be: specifically the Boot and Flogger, the pub tucked in the corner where you’d grab a beer before heading out onto the lawn to listen to a local band.</p><p data-block-key="oeko">“It was an interesting area in the 1970s, to say the least,” Rob says.</p><img alt="IMG_7173" class="richtext-image full-width" height="536" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7173.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="4vgab">“There were older people still in government houses but most people who were entering home ownership weren&#x27;t interested in buying in Kingston because its future was uncertain. </p><p data-block-key="2e44a">“I’d come from inner Sydney and so I loved the bohemian vibe.”</p><p data-block-key="77cfa">A young Rob, who’d studied architecture in Sydney before moving to the capital in 1976 to work for the Department of Urban and Regional Development, was loving his steady income as a graduate clerk. He’d thought about buying a house, and when he drove past <a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">61 Kennedy Street</a>, a 40-year-old ex-govvie, he loved the idea of living among the bohemian vibe of Kingston.</p><img alt="IMG_7172" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1188" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7172.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="84bje">“It was for sale for $32,000,” Rob recalls.</p><p data-block-key="c8fsb">“My salary at the time was $8,000 a year. The most anyone would lend me wass $30,000 — so that was the offer I put in and it was mine.”</p><p data-block-key="5rjk1">61 Kennedy Street became home “almost immediately”, mostly thanks to friends packed into the lounge room on Friday and Saturday nights; drinking, smoking, playing board games and dancing to Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.</p><p data-block-key="97faa">“Oh, this house has seen a lot of parties,” Rob says.</p><img alt="IMG_7161" class="richtext-image full-width" height="536" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7161.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9pjoo">“I was very social when I first bought it. I&#x27;m gay and I&#x27;ve got a wide group of friends. It was a very social house — arguably too social.</p><p data-block-key="8n4v6">“I got out the old photo albums, dusted them off: I haven&#x27;t looked at them for years.</p><p data-block-key="ank2m">“It was a very fun time. I&#x27;ve got lots of happy memories associated with this house.”</p><p data-block-key="35d74">An extension in 1997 saw a new section added to the back of the house; opening up the kitchen and adding a second living area and a new laundry. The old laundry became a second bathroom at this time, while the main bathroom was updated in 2006.</p><img alt="61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998-image-0-20230820080137951346-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998-imag.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="e2iea">Ever the entertainer, Rob designed the extended home to facilitate its many visitors, including friends, and nieces and nephews from overseas and across Australia who wanted to see Australia’s young capital. He created a separate zone of the house for himself; with the main bedroom, bathroom and dressing room able to be closed off for privacy while guests were staying.</p><p data-block-key="4lk6d">After 46 years, Rob is selling up — it’s only the second time the 148sqm heritage-listed home has been for sale in its 87-year history. Originally built in 1936, the property was owned by the Commonwealth Government until 1963, when the sitting tenant bought it. Rob bought it from this tenant in 1977.</p><img alt="IMG_7171" class="richtext-image full-width" height="531" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7171.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="1brov">The new owners can extend the home, Rob says, in line with heritage guidelines, but the house cannot be knocked down. It’s one of around 50 homes in the Eastlake Heritage Housing Precinct: a precious reminder of a fledgling capital’s early years.</p><p data-block-key="asike">“It&#x27;s not a large family house,” Rob says.</p><p data-block-key="67jgs">“I see the new owners as a young professional couple, maybe with dogs, or a retired couple who like to garden.</p><p data-block-key="9t95m">“A small family could happily live here.</p><p data-block-key="auhf8">“But it’s definitely the perfect property for someone hoping to own a beautiful piece of Canberra history.”</p><p data-block-key="dnrdj">And Rob won’t be too far away – he’s bought a penthouse apartment just around the corner.</p><p data-block-key="230sq"><b>Number 61 Kennedy Street, Kingston, goes to auction at 10.30am on Saturday 23 September 2023.</b></p><p data-block-key="k1bp"><a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><b>View the full listing.</b></a></p>

‘It’s seen a lot of parties’: Seller of 61 Kennedy Street takes us back to Kingston in the 1970s

<p data-block-key="ak90y">What if the Kingston Foreshore was actually named The Eastlake Foreshore? And instead of living in Barton, you lived in Telopea? While some of Walter Burley Griffin&#x27;s original suburb names stuck, others were swept aside or used in very different ways across the capital.</p><p data-block-key="dtp94">Between 1913 and 1920, Griffin laid out the apex of suburbs and streets that would form the heart of our city. But in 1927, the suburbs were renamed to honour the leaders of Australian federation.</p><p data-block-key="d606o">Here are some of the suburb names Griffin dreamed of that simply don&#x27;t exist anymore.</p><h2 data-block-key="87cgj">Blandfordia (Forrest)</h2><img alt="IMG_4801" class="richtext-image full-width" height="298" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4801.width-800.jpg" width="411"><p data-block-key="6sjvv">Blandfordia was one of the earliest suburbs in Canberra, built to the original plans. Named after the Christmas Bell, a flowering plant native to eastern Australia, it was gazetted as a suburb in 1928.</p><p data-block-key="5ic4r">Its circular streets were classic Burley Griffin design and its elegant tree-lined avenues and stately homes were - and still are among the most coveted in the ACT.</p><img alt="IMG_4802" class="richtext-image full-width" height="532" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4802.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="5lb0m">The original residents of Blandfordia were mostly senior public servants who moved in when Federal Parliament finally moved from Melbourne to Canberra. Blandfordia is now simply a part of the suburb of Forrest.</p><h2 data-block-key="8be1o">Eastlake (Kingston)</h2><img alt="IMG_4789" class="richtext-image full-width" height="378" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4789.width-800.jpg" width="731"><p data-block-key="aervl">During the initial stages of Canberra&#x27;s formation, the region known as Kingston was ‘Eastlake’. The district of Eastlake was originally used as housing for blue collar works, specifically labourers who had been brought in to build the infrastructure Australia&#x27;s capital city.</p><p data-block-key="8hnc">The neighbouring suburb of Forrest (Blandfordia) was set aside for more &#x27;upper class&#x27; public servants of middle and higher ranks. </p><img alt="IMG_4790" class="richtext-image full-width" height="540" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4790.width-800.jpg" width="590"><p data-block-key="bj6e2">The Eastlake Football and Cricket Club that still exists in Manuka stands as a memory of Canberra&#x27;s foundation. </p><h2 data-block-key="bag3h">Westlake (Yarralumla) </h2><img alt="IMG_4804" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4804.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="7qif8">Westlake, now a ghost town, was once a thriving suburb that existed in Canberra from 1922 to 1965. Located on the outskirts of Yarralumla, the site where Westlake once existed is now surrounded by embassies and bushland. </p><p data-block-key="57e2k">Westlake was composed of tradesmen and their families, who came to Canberra to build the capital&#x27;s first buildings (among them the Sydney and Melbourne buildings). Original housing consisted of tents and a community hall, but was soon followed by 61 temporary cottages.</p><p data-block-key="2onoh">Nearby, around 20 timber huts were built for the single men, and this area was known as the Hostel Camp.</p><img alt="IMG_4805" class="richtext-image full-width" height="473" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4805.width-800.jpg" width="600"><p data-block-key="4qah7">All of the original Westlake cottages were eventually sold off one by one or taken away on the backs of trucks, with the last cottage removed in 1965. A number are now over the border in Queanbeyan and one sits with a new coat of paint in River Street, Oaks Estate.</p><p data-block-key="ba1bd">At its peak, the Westlake area had 700 residents and remnants of original buildings can be found on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin today. </p><h2 data-block-key="5iuk6">The Causeway (Kingston) </h2><img alt="IMG_4799" class="richtext-image full-width" height="571" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4799.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="7oldf">The Causeway is still a small district within the suburb of Kingston, adjacent to Kingston Foreshore, but was once a much larger community. It was originally planned by Burley Griffin to be parallel to a dam across the Molonglo River, but this never transpired. </p><p data-block-key="ero01">The earliest housing at The Causeway consisted of modest cottages. Around 120 timber cottages were constructed at The Causeway between 1925 and 1926, to accommodate construction workers. </p><img alt="IMG_4798" class="richtext-image full-width" height="805" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4798.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="2hevp">After WWII, housing at The Causeway and Westlake was considered sub-standard and the wooden cottages were wrapped with brick veneer. Despite major redevelopments of the Kingston Foreshore in recent years, a close-knit community of residents still lives at The Causeway. </p><h2 data-block-key="e60hp">Telopea Park (Barton) </h2><img alt="IMG_4795" class="richtext-image full-width" height="794" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4795.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9j6c6">Today, we know Telopea Park as home to one the oldest parks and schools in Canberra. Named after the floral emblem of NSW, Telopea Park was planned at the end of Sydney Avenue by Walter Burley Griffin and originally described the whole area now known as Barton.</p><img alt="IMG_4806" class="richtext-image full-width" height="439" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_4806.width-800.jpg" width="699"><p data-block-key="f6fct">While the suburb itself was established in 1922, it was renamed Barton in 1928 when Sir Edmund Barton was named the first Prime Minister of Australia. The original plans for the area included a parkland full of waratahs (botanical name Telopea). The plans never eventuated, but the name Telopea stuck. </p>

<h2 data-block-key="4wxbk">An unlikely hero during the 2003 bushfires.</h2><img alt="JonStanhope-600x450.jpeg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="450" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/JonStanhope-600x450.width-800.jpg" width="600"><p data-block-key="6baon">During the bushfires of 2003, which destroyed 500 homes and killed four people, then Chief Minister Jon Stanhope stripped to his underwear and swam to the rescue of a pilot whose helicopter had crashed into Bendora Dam, in Namadgi National Park.</p><h2 data-block-key="841l2">Yass could have been the nation’s capital.</h2><img alt="shutterstock_1250441644.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="529" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_1250441644.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="eh5s6">Yass was initially recommended as the site of the capital, with a proposed boundary extending from Lake George to Queanbeyan and incorporating the “sleepy Parish of Canberra”. Initial plans for the capital stated that it had to be in NSW, at least 100 miles from Sydney and at least 100 square miles in size.</p><h2 data-block-key="213cf">Tuggeranong means ‘cold valley’.</h2><img alt="shutterstock_1422958913.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_1422958913.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="151h2">The Ngambri people called Tuggeranong the Cold Valley. Not surprising given its proximity to the base of the Brindabellas, often snow-capped during the Canberra winter.</p><h2 data-block-key="pfq9">And it then became ‘nappy valley’.</h2><p data-block-key="60adk">The name Nappy Valley was given to Tuggeranong by people living in Canberra’s inner north and south in the 1970s. Those living in established homes in Forrest, Griffith, Red Hill, Narrabundah, Ainslie, Reid, Braddon and Turner, decided it was time for some serious renovations to their homes, and the builders and other tradesmen they employed settled in Tuggeranong.</p><h2 data-block-key="a30en">Acton was once home to a convict prison.</h2><p data-block-key="24d6j">In 1823, retired Lieutentant Joshua John Moore set up rudimentary huts for his family and workers on the banks of the Molonglo River at Acton, about where the National Museum of Australia now stands. A convict prison was built on Moore’s land in the 1840s, where convicts were housed, flogged and put in the stocks. While the last convict lashing occurred in 1870, the prison stood standing at Acton until the 1920s, when the first buildings of the capital were erected.</p><h2 data-block-key="fsdej">Edward Crace drowned about where Belconnen stands today.</h2><p data-block-key="1bjcg">Ignoring the advice of many men around him, Edward Crace (the namesake of the northern Canberra suburb) forced his driver to attempt to cross a flooded Ginninderra Creek in 1892. The horse and carriage capsized, killing Crace and his driver, George Kemp. The fate of the poor horses is unknown.</p><h2 data-block-key="3s9ps">Food ordered for the grand opening of Parliament House ended up at Queanbeyan tip.</h2><img alt="shutterstock_101618710.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="472" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_101618710.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="4h192">Thousands were expected to gather in Barton on 9 May 1927, when the provisional Parliament House opened. But few turned up. Enormous platters of meat pies and seafood - made in Sydney and transported down to Canberra by horse and carriage - ended up at the tip in Queanbeyan. (There was no tip in Canberra at the time.)</p><h2 data-block-key="73s62">New Parliament House cost more than the Snowy Hydro Scheme.</h2><img alt="shutterstock_398035732.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_398035732.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="3fv91">In 1988, when New Parliament House opened on Capital Hill, it was the most expensive infrastructure project Australia had ever seen. It was a long overdue project though - the original Parliament House (or “wedding cake”) was meant to house Parliament for 10 years but ended up doing so for 61.</p><h2 data-block-key="j0fs">The first attempt to dam Lake Burley Griffin failed.</h2><img alt="shutterstock_2055740258.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_2055740258.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="73bsp">By all accounts 1963 was one very hot year. An attempt was made to dam our lake but the unrelenting heat saw the water dry up (just imagine the smell down by the water’s edge at Yarralumla). More than 12 months later the rains finally came and Lake Burley Griffin was officially opened in 1964.</p><h2 data-block-key="3j6ad">The reason we&#x27;re now the ‘bush capital’.</h2><img alt="shutterstock_1416278759.jpg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="621" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_1416278759.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="od0b">Over 13 years between 1913 and 1926, almost two million trees and shrubs were planted across the capital, under the guidance of Charles Weston. Weston was the officer in charge of the first Afforestation Branch and when he died in 1935, his ashes were scattered, at his request, among the trees he planted in front of Old Parliament House.</p><h2 data-block-key="3ot6b">Bushrangers once roamed the land we live on.</h2><p data-block-key="b48ii">In the 1830s, the Limestone Plains were described as “infested with bushrangers”. Two decades later The Jingera Mob - a loose group of cattle thieves, escaped convicts, hardened bushrangers and other assorted misfits and drunks - terrorised the farming families of the Canberra region.</p><h2 data-block-key="2n1fh">The oldest building in Canberra is …</h2><img alt="Church_of_St_John_Canberra-1_(39648211152).jpeg" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Church_of_St_John_Canberra-1_39648211152.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="fj60f">St John’s Anglican Church at Reid. Land for the church was donated by Robert Campbell, owner of the property ‘Duntroon’.
