It was East Coast versus West Coast at the auction of 2/21 Walls Creek Road East, Goobarragandra, NSW, on the weekend, as a couple from Sydney and a couple from Perth battled it out for ownership of the extraordinary property known as the ‘Earth House’.In the end, a Sydney couple looking for a ‘weekender’ claimed ownership, purchasing the off-the-grid property near Tumut, NSW, for $2.15 million.<img alt="2-21-walls-creek-road-east-goobarragandra-nsw-2720-93633-image-0-20240_c10eETK-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/2-21-walls-creek-road-east-goobarragandra-nsw-.width-800.jpg" width="800">Featured on Foxtel’s Grand Designs, the house was built into the side of a hill at Goobarragandra by Canberra couple Trevor and Jeanette Robinson. The home’s sustainable features and breathtaking design – the roof is made of earth and grass – drew “phenomenal interest” in the marketing of the property according to sales agent Jane Macken.“It was the most interest I’ve had in a property ever,” Jane says.“It came from right across Australia. Bidding started at $1.95 million, with the Sydney couple claiming ownership at $2.15 million.LJ Hooker agent Andy Greenberger scored the Earth House listing after previously selling a Rivett property owned by Trevor and Jeanette Robinson. Its location, carved into the side of a hill, offered views down to the river and beyond, and gave it “ultimate privacy”.The Earth House was sold with all of its custom furnishings.“This is the kind of home you will never see again,” Jane says.“Every inclusion is top-notch. Sydney couple buy the 'Earth House' near Tumut as a weekender

For a very brief moment while driving along Simpson Street, Watson, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Boston, Massachusetts.The brand new home coming to life at number 18 is being built in the Georgian architectural style: think brick walls laid in a Flemish bond, multi-pane windows, a side-gabled roof and a commanding front entrance with crown and pilasters. Inside, it’s all about soaring ceilings, arches, natural finishes and decorative cornices.<img alt="image5" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image5.width-800.jpg" width="800">The Georgian style was prominent in Britain during the successive reign of three King Georges (1714 to 1830). It was used heavily in building the brand new cities of New York and Boston in the far north-east United States in the mid-1700s.Located smack-bang in the middle of Watson, Canberra — a suburb of mid-century moderns — the new build definitely stands out. But there are myriad reasons the couple behind the build, David and Ebony-Maria Levy, chose to build in the Georgian style.<img alt="image0" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image0_P4YneLl.width-800.jpg" width="800">“We bought the original house back in 2011, a three-bedroom ex-government house, but by 2019 we’d had two children, were working from home exclusively and needed more space,” Ebony says.“We started with quotes for a simple extension and it was just so cost prohibitive that it was not that much more of a stretch to begin again, and to be able to have things like higher ceilings, to really ensure that the foundation was great, things like that. “So we just did the cost benefit analysis and realised that starting fresh would actually represent a better return on investment.”<img alt="image7" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image7.width-800.jpg" width="800">The couple began to design their dream home; and rather than focus on the short term, they wanted to build a house that would still be standing in 200 years. It was a chance to unite timeless design with a massive focus on sustainability.“We asked ourselves, what does a house that will withstand the next century or two look like?” Ebony says.“So in that sense, you have to go back in time to look at what worked. And we are strongly of the view that you can achieve timelessness only through the use of natural materials, like clay, stone and timber.<img alt="image8" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image8.width-800.jpg" width="800">“It’s these sorts of materials that are enhanced by time. The beauty of traditional architecture comes down to the material longevity of the buildings, in that sense.”The Levys drew a lot of courage from Leon Krier’s book The Architecture of Community (2009), in which Krier reassuringly states “even an imbecile cannot build a tectonic error when using natural materials; synthetic materials instead make even abstruse, illogical structures stand up&quot;.<img alt="image12" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image12.width-800.jpg" width="800">Says Ebony: “It&#x27;s 2023, so I&#x27;m not at all suggesting that mid-century homes from the 20th century won&#x27;t take on that iconic status in 100 or 150 years, but the houses that are going up now —  the boxy, greyish monstrosities in the new suburbs — I just don&#x27;t believe, given the comparative poor quality of synthetic materials being widely used, that they’ll have that same longevity.&quot;We staunchly believe that the most sustainable home is one that does not require replacing.” Finding an architect for the Georgian dream home proved challenging. In fact, it was impossible. So the Levys designed the home themselves based on plans set out in Abraham Swan’s 1757 stylebook on Georgian architectural designs and details. Alex Kwong of AK Design then drew up the plans.<img alt="image10" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image10.width-800.jpg" width="800">Finding a builder, however, was much easier. From the moment they read the Laggner Constructions tagline: ‘Building tomorrow’s heritage’, David and Ebony knew they were the builders for their home. Both the Laggners and the Levys share Austrian ancestry, so that was something special to discover they had in common. Laggner Constructions have relished working on the home, and so has every tradie and craftsperson since. Those working on the home have gained new (old) skills, with one carpenter, Ned Oreskovic of Details By Ned, using his grandfather’s tools to hand-carve the staircase turns.<img alt="image9" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image9.width-800.jpg" width="800">“The house offers this crazy sense of connection to the past,” Ebony says.“We&#x27;re really grateful to all the people who have these skills and knowledge and are able to educate us in the process.“It&#x27;s the people that are doing the work that deserve all the praise.”So what’s the price tag on a four-bedroom, library, study, three-bathroom home in a style that’s so rare, especially in the capital?“We’re building the cheapest house out of anyone we know,” Ebony says with a laugh. “I mean, it’s built from bricks. Just simple, Boral bricks.<img alt="image11" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/image11.width-800.jpg" width="800">“But we also started with this deep desire to use as many locally-sourced, natural materials as possible, which has delivered commensurate savings. “We’ve incorporated salvaged Turpentine wharf piers and remilled Spotted Gum telegraph poles in our interior design.&quot;Our kitchen cupboards will be made from recycled timber salvaged from Sydney house roofs. We have salvaged a bunch of antique tiles for our portico and exterior terraces. And we have big plans to used oyster shells to cover the bolts on the garage lintel, because oysters are great and sadly underused in architectural contexts. <img alt="IMG_9161" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_9161.width-800.jpg" width="800">“We’ve been diligent with our sourcing to ensure we keep our budget in check.” The Levy family expect to move into their Georgian revival home in Watson in early 2024. 'A masterpiece': Canberra architect Glen Dowse's five-level home hits the market

Our city is always evolving, with stunning new developments and homes featuring the latest design trends and building technologies.But as we set our sights on the future, we thought it was only fitting to tip our hat to 8 early architects who helped shape our beautiful city….<h4>Alastair Swayn</h4>Born in Scotland, Alastair Swayne moved to Canberra in 1979 where he became director of an award-winning local architectural firm and was later appointed the ACT government&#x27;s inaugural architect.Some of Swayn’s work includes:<ul><li>Brindabella Business Park at Canberra Airport</li><li>the Australian Institute of Sports Visitors Centre</li><li>the CSIRO Discovery Centre</li><li>Lake Ginninderra College</li><li>Bonython Primary</li><li>the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet</li></ul>His style was always progressively sustainable, and reflected his humanitarian values of equality and community.Alastair was also a Professor of Architecture at the University of Canberra, and passed away in 2016.<h4>Michael Dysart</h4>Although architect Michael Dysart is based in Sydney, his 1970s designs of the Urambi Village in Kambah and Wybalena Grove in Cook are perhaps two of the most celebrated residential designs in the ACT.His unique style pays homage to a property’s natural setting, with clever layouts offering scenic views in every direction. Characteristic inclusions include split level floorplans, clerestory windows, timber decks, and exposed beams.Dysart still resides in Sydney and is presenting at this year’s <a href="https://designcanberrafestival.com.au/event/design-revisited-architect-michael-dysart/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Design Canberra Festival</a>.<h4>Harry Siedler</h4>Born in Austria, Harry Siedler moved to Australia in 1948. His architectural work won countless awards, and he is widely recognised as having contributed extensively to Australia’s landscape.Some of Siedler’s work in Canberra includes:<ul><li>Bowden House</li><li>Barton offices on Kings Avenue</li><li>Lakeview townhouses in Yarralumla</li><li>Campbell Group Housing apartments</li><li>Canberra South Bowling Club</li></ul>Siedler’s designs were contemporary for their time, and constantly evolved to stay on trend with social norms and the latest building technologies. He passed away in 2006, aged 82.<h4>Kenneth Oliphant</h4>Born in Victoria in 1896, Kenneth Oliphant moved to Canberra in 1926 when he was posted here to supervise the construction of Canberra’s earliest homes in Forrest – built for the first public servants moving to Australia’s new capital.He then went on to privately design more than 30 original homes in Canberra, mostly in Red Hill, Forrest, Barton and Griffith. One of his designs was for Canberra’s first real estate agents – Calthorpe and Woodger – which is now the heritage-listed museum, Calthorpes’ House, in Red Hill.Oliphant drew inspiration from several architectural styles, and his homes often feature intricate detail, ornate ceilings, fireplaces, and intuitive layouts.Oliphant retired in the 1960s and passed away in 1975.<h4>John Smith Murdoch</h4>Unknown to many, John Smith Murdoch was a devoted architect who played a prominent role in designing Canberra, including:<ul><li>Old Parliament House</li><li>the Hyatt Hotel</li><li>Hotel Kurrajong</li><li>Kingston Power Station (now Canberra Glassworks)</li><li>Gorman House</li><li>Ainslie Public School</li></ul>Murdoch grew up in Scotland and moved to Australia in the 1880s where he worked his way up to become Australia’s Commonwealth Chief Architect by 1919.He worked closely with Walter Burley Griffin on Canberra’s urban design, and favoured classic design principles with clean lines, harmonious proportions, open space and lots of natural light.<h4>Romaldo Giurgola</h4>Romaldo Giurgola is a globally revered architect who was invited to be on the panel of judges for the 1980 competition to design Parliament House. Instead, he entered and beat out 329 other entrants to win it.It was then that Giurgola, who was born in Italy and designed numerous architectural masterpieces in the United States, came to live in Canberra where he stayed until his passing at age 95.Giurgola also designed St Thomas Aquinas Catholic church in Charnwood, and his own home at Lake Bathurst in Goulburn.<h4>Margaret Hendry</h4>While much of Canberra’s early architectural history comes from male architects, Margaret Hendry was the first female landscape architect in Australia whose love of nature and remarkable design skill helped shape our nation’s capital.Hendry studied all over the world before moving to Canberra in 1963 where she designed numerous town centres, shopping centres, schools, and public spaces.She was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1992 and passed away in 2001. The new Margaret Hendry School in Taylor is named in her honour.<h4>A tribute to the master</h4>It seems fitting that we pay our respects to a man whose architectural nous and vision paved the way for the beautiful city we live in: Walter Burley Griffin.Born on November 24, 1987 in Illinois, Griffin was 34 when he entered a competition to design a then unnamed new federal capital city. By that stage of his life, Griffin had gained a Bachelor in Architecture and worked extensively in Chicago designing buildings and urban landscapes.His entry was chosen from 136 other designs, and he went on to visit – and later move to – Australia with his wife. Although <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/specials/curious-canberra/2017-04-03/what-were-the-coolest-things-in-walter-burley-griffins-plan/8390208?nw=0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">not all of Griffin’s original design was realised</a>, we still have him to thank for many of the urban elements which make Canberra so impressive.“I have planned a city that is not like any other in the world. I have planned it not in a way that I expected any government authorities in the world would accept.
