People come here from all over the nation (and the world) to nerd out on so much stuff: from Australian war history and portraits to tulips and hotted-up V8s.</p><p data-block-key="36jge">But one of the biggest things people come here to nerd out on is … space. It’s owned by NASA and is one of three Deep Space Network stations around the world (sister stations are located at Goldstone, California, and near Madrid, Spain).</p><p data-block-key="utgb">Together, the three stations provide around-the-clock contact with more than 30 spacecraft, including missions to Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, the moon and the sun.</p><p data-block-key="7hfec">(The Visitors Centre and cafe are currently closed to the public but viewing the 70m and 34m telescopes is simply awesome.)</p><h3 data-block-key="eusk5">10.30am: Look for Ewoks at the Australian National Botanic Gardens</h3><img alt="Australian_National_Botanic_Gardens_rainforest_mist_walk_01" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Australian_National_Botanic_Gardens_rainforest.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="fp1j3">Pretend you’re an Ewok on the forest moon of Endor, weaving among the treetops on a glider. Witness the world from a new perspective and be transported to the edge of what’s possible.</p><h3 data-block-key="dfckf">3.30pm: Head to Canberra’s own Imperial Base</h3><img alt="shutterstock_1602424123" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/shutterstock_1602424123.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="1q3i3">Yes Black Mountain Tower is an icon of the Canberra skyline, but if you squint your eyes, its imposing concrete design makes for a passable impression of an Imperial Base in the science-fiction universe.</p><p data-block-key="e1pds">Don the costume of your favourite character and take pics with the tower in the background. We’ve designed the perfect day out for mini ‘Star Wars’ fans

<p data-block-key="iu4a5">While we were officially declared Australia’s capital in 1913, it took some years for the building to begin.</p><p data-block-key="2b3hh">But by 1924, thousands of men had converged on the treeless plains of the region to start to erect Australia&#x27;s new capital. With every new building, every new road and a sewer being carved out underground, our city began to emerge.</p><p data-block-key="b0be">Here are the big events that took place 100 years ago.</p><h3 data-block-key="a73fl">The Burns Club is born.</h3><img alt="burns club" class="richtext-image full-width" height="450" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/burns_club.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="6icfb">Many of the 1,400 men working to build Canberra in the 1920s were Scottish. They’d gather on the banks of the Molonglo for ‘Burns Evenings’, where the works of famed Scottish poet Robert Burns would be read out loud.</p><p data-block-key="fiodo">These evenings were formalised with the establishment of the Burns Club in 1924; a club for Scots to socialise, maintain their Scottish cultural interests and ties, and provide each other with moral and other support in their new country.</p><img alt="burnsclub-1200x685" class="richtext-image full-width" height="456" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/burnsclub-1200x685.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="8b3m2">Within weeks of forming, the club had hosted a Halloween concert, formed a choir, hosted a Highland Gathering (the profits of which were donated to the P&amp;C Association of the Telopea Park School) and formed a soccer team. The Burns Club is still a much-loved club within the Canberra community today.</p><h3 data-block-key="b1ono">An observatory opens at Mount Stromlo.</h3><p data-block-key="erjqu"></p><img alt="observatory" class="richtext-image full-width" height="420" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/observatory.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="59sqq">The Commonwealth Solar Observatory was established in 1924, on Mount Stromlo, on the outskirts of a very new Canberra. Founded mainly to study the sun and support research into geophysics, the complex included residences, plant and maintenance buildings, as well as scientific observation and recording equipment.</p><h3 data-block-key="arb19">Hostel No. 1 (now the Hyatt) officially opens.</h3><img alt="hyatt" class="richtext-image full-width" height="592" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/hyatt.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="epj1m">Canberra’s first hotel (at first named a ‘hostel’ due to the prohibition of alcohol in the territory), opened in December 1924, just in time for the first auction of residential land in the capital.</p><p data-block-key="5gabq">The hotel was designed by federal architect John Smith Murdoch, and used an unusual scheme of pavilions arranged around garden courts.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-06-12 at 11.43.40 am" class="richtext-image full-width" height="596" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-06-12_at_11.43.40_am.width-800.png" width="706"><p data-block-key="2dnge">In 1925, it became The Hotel Canberra, and its guests were mostly politicians and senior public officials waiting for their homes to be built in Reid, Kingston and Griffith.</p><h3 data-block-key="ck99i">The first commercial leases are sold.</h3><img alt="jb youngs" class="richtext-image full-width" height="432" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/jb_youngs.width-800.jpg" width="700"><p data-block-key="1eddv">On 12 December 1924, Herbert Colman acquired Canberra’s first retail lease, at Kingston (and a gold pen from the government in recognition of the historic event).</p><p data-block-key="a3pdq">Exactly a year later, in December 1925, he opened the first JB Young’s department store on Giles Street, Eastlake (now Kingston). Colman’s motto was reportedly ‘enterprise before population’.</p><h3 data-block-key="br209">The first Canberra ‘airport’ is declared.</h3><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-06-12 at 11.35.39 am" class="richtext-image full-width" height="448" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-06-12_at_11.35.39_am.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="1pk87">Northbourne Aviation Ground was declared operational on 4 March 1924. Essentially a cleared paddock in Dickson (about where the playing field behind Dickson College is today), the aviation ground was mostly used for emergency landings between Melbourne and Sydney (airlines at the time didn’t offer Canberra as a ‘destination’, funnily enough.)</p><img alt="northbourne aviation" class="richtext-image full-width" height="526" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/northbourne_aviation.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="brf68">The aviation ground operated for a couple of years before it was deemed unsuitable for the massive influx of aircraft that would arrive for the official opening of Parliament House in 1926. Instead, a paddock in the Majura Valley – owned by the Campbell family at the time – was chosen as the new airport.</p>

We wind back the clock to Canberra’s big events of 1924

<h3 data-block-key="044ti">People come here for a year. Two maximum.</h3><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-05-21 at 1.34.19 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="530" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-05-21_at_1.34.19_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="97a8o">How many of you (from somewhere else) swore you’d give Canberra two years and then you’d move back home to Sydney, Melbourne or regional NSW? And then, let me guess, without even realising it, this place became home. And you wanted to stay. Because it’s so easy here. And the bush is right there. The moment you make that decision to stay, you become a true Canberran.</p><h3 data-block-key="3pgqh">Half of our working population gets paid on the same day.</h3><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-05-21 at 1.05.45 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="444" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-05-21_at_1.05.45_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="9d1ss">Do not, I repeat <i>do not</i>, head to Canberra Centre on your lunch break on public service payday. It’s the day half of Canberra is cashed up and willing to buy lunch or splurge on a set of Country Road tea towels.</p><p data-block-key="j3od">The food delivery apps must get a massive workout that night too (imagine the data analysts at Uber wondering why half of Canberra orders butter chicken and garlic naans on the same night), and the morning teas at work are loaded with all the expensive stuff like pastries from Flute.</p><h3 data-block-key="9lh5b">The best choc tops are at Dendy.</h3><img alt="choc top" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/choc_top.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9huug">They literally employ people to make them by hand. Outrageous. Macadamia for me please.</p><h3 data-block-key="5oqcd">The oldies party at 88mph and the kids go to Mooseheads.</h3><img alt="88mph" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/88mph.width-800.jpg" width="600"><p data-block-key="f51f3">You’ll never run into your teenager on a night out as long as you stick to the rules: mum and all her friends stick to the flashing dance floor at 88 while the kids do tequila shots at upstairs Moose. What the young ones seem to forget, though, is that mum and her friends once dominated the dance floor at Moose (old Moose that is, the version before it burnt down) to such classic tunes as <i>The Macarena</i>, <i>Coco Jumbo</i> and <i>Rhythm of the Night</i>. Cop that.</p><h3 data-block-key="erian">When you spot Black Mountain Tower, you know you’re home.</h3><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-05-21 at 1.20.03 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="528" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-05-21_at_1.20.03_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="a5u94">Whether you’re coming back from a three-day bender at a festival in Sydney or from a long weekend at the coast on a Sunday night, when you see that tower you know you’re back where you belong. And that your nice warm comfy bed is not far away.</p><h3 data-block-key="6hmua">‘Just park at the Target car park.’</h3><img alt="target" class="richtext-image full-width" height="420" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/target.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="36ktn">There’s no longer a Target in Civic, but this carpark will always be known for the retail experience that existed underneath it.</p><h3 data-block-key="4ok8i">The Civic merry–go-round came from St Kilda.</h3><img alt="220151_canberra-10" class="richtext-image full-width" height="439" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/220151_canberra-10.width-800.jpg" width="662"><p data-block-key="3ll2c">The historic merry-go-round has been a Canberra icon since 1974 — but it’s actually been delighting kids for more than a century. Designer and builder Herbert Thomson of Armadale, Victoria, created the carousel in 1913.</p><p data-block-key="6kqsh">The massive organ, 52 hand-carved wooden horses and two hand-carved elephants were imported from Germany, while the twisted brass upright poles were made in Scotland. It was a much-loved ride on the St. Kilda esplanade for 60 years before being sold at auction to the residents of Canberra for $40,000.</p><h3 data-block-key="ijc9">We go for Queensland in the State of Origin.</h3><img alt="queensland" class="richtext-image full-width" height="315" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/queensland.width-800.jpg" width="600"><p data-block-key="9i9p3">Never mind the fact we’re completely surrounded by NSW, when it comes to this rugby league grudge match, we go for the Queenslanders. Because who wants to see a Queanbeyan colleague gloating around the office after a Blues win? Not us.</p><h3 data-block-key="9i84p">From mid-December to the end of January, we become a ghost town.</h3><p data-block-key="362gl">The legend goes that Canberrans officially turn on the ‘out of office’ email around 15 December, and don’t return until the first week of school the following year. Broulee, Narawallee and Tuross are the destinations of choice, and rumour has it the population of Batemans Bay surges from 17,000 to 35,000 over the summer months.</p><h3 data-block-key="a57ek">You don’t swim at Pine Island.</h3><img alt="Pine-Islnd-Beach-area-access-1024x768" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Pine-Islnd-Beach-area-access-1024x768.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="7tsf4">It’s where the less-than-desirables go to drink and there’s broken glass everywhere. (This is, in fact, completely false. As a frequent swimmer at Pine Island, I read my book on the sandy shores under the pine trees and my kids love exploring the giant rocks in the water. It’s awesome. There are lots of teens there but also lots of families.)</p><h3 data-block-key="dunsd">Driving to the coast isn’t the same with a pie from the Braidwood Bakery.</h3><img alt="trappers-bakery-braidwood" class="richtext-image full-width" height="412" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/trappers-bakery-braidwood.width-800.jpg" width="550"><p data-block-key="2l76j">Or a sausage roll. Or an apple turnover with cream. And a Dare Iced Coffee to wash it all down.</p>

<p data-block-key="qtsys">Did you really grow up in Australia if you didn’t eat all the Kingstons out of a packet of Arnott’s Assorted Creams before your siblings could?</p><p data-block-key="38efj">Whether it was a packet of Family Favourites (think Nice, Milk Arrowroot and Choc Ripple) or special occasion packets of chocolate biscuits like Mint Slice or Choc Monte, a packet of Arnott’s biscuits was – and still is – a staple in every Australian pantry.</p><p data-block-key="f32ct">We decided to take on the challenge of matching Canberra suburbs to their ideal Arnott’s bikkie.</p><h3 data-block-key="8g85g">Queanbeyan: Orange Slice</h3><img alt="Arnotts_Image_1280px_853px_20248_QBN" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Arnotts_Image_1280px_853px_20248_QBN.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="dftjh">It’s the biscuit people don’t really understand and, if we’re honest, are a little reluctant to try. Which of these cheeky Canberra bumper stickers is your fave?

<p data-block-key="j9h8h">Wind the clock back 100 years and the capital looks something like this: the hulking silhouettes of a partly-built Parliament House and mostly built Hostel No.1 (now the Hyatt Hotel) rise from the land over near Capital Hill, with nothing but dusty, treeless plains between. The spire of St John’s, Reid dominates the skyline across the river, and the only other major building of note is the Eastlake Powerhouse.</p><img alt="old-canberra-100-years-19" class="richtext-image full-width" height="450" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/old-canberra-100-years-19.width-800.jpg" width="620"><p data-block-key="elg96">A light tramway runs from the powerhouse to the Yarralumla Brickworks, and dotted across the capital at the site of several major infrastructure projects - including its first main sewer - are rows and rows of tents, housing the thousands of men who’ve come from across the world to build Canberra from the ground up.</p><p data-block-key="a84p5">Life for the construction workers is no picnic: long hard days of labour and sleeping on mattresses made of hay in between. It’s little wonder, then, that they live for the weekends, which include two main pastimes.</p><h3 data-block-key="ds9ol">Heading over the border to drink in Queanbeyan.</h3><img alt="learn-days-end-workers-oph-3111468-1" class="richtext-image full-width" height="629" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/learn-days-end-workers-oph-3111468-1.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6v2te">In 1910, Minister for Home Affairs King O’Malley (yes he was a real person) banned liquor licences in the new Australian Capital Territory, marking the beginning of a 17-year dry spell for Canberra. This meant the thirsty workers building Canberra were forced to cross the border into Queanbeyan for a drink.</p><p data-block-key="78a69">In his 1988 thesis, the Australian National University’s HJ Gibbney describes King O&#x27;Malley&#x27;s liquor policy as “a national joke” .</p><p data-block-key="d5ni9">“The policy had always been resented in the Territory and, as the population expanded, both the law and its evasion became something of a national joke.</p><p data-block-key="ej806">“Queanbeyan hotels made large profits from thirsty Territorians and every Saturday afternoon in Queanbeyan became something of an orgy.</p><img alt="Royal Hotel souvenir" class="richtext-image full-width" height="504" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Royal_Hotel_souvenir.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="c422s">“Crawford Vaughan, a prohibition leader, wrote: ‘I saw Queanbeyan on Saturday and it was what one could expect in a town invaded by thousands of men from constructions camps … while it is deplorable to see crowds wandering from pub to pub, the conditions were no worse to than I have seen in towns adjacent to other construction works of a similar magnitude.’</p><p data-block-key="8hudu">“The law prohibited sale but not consumption and ‘sly grog’ prosecutions were not infrequent. Most men who visited Queanbeyan brought back bottled liquor, either for themselves or for friends, and despite the restrictions, there was a considerable trade in empty bottles.”</p><h3 data-block-key="1q4nl">Taking to the field for a game of Aussie Rules.</h3><p data-block-key="8ppoq">Most of Canberra&#x27;s 1924 population lived mostly for sports, with drinking and gambling enthusiastically pursued on the sidelines.</p><img alt="living in tents" class="richtext-image full-width" height="436" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/living_in_tents.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="a9gmm">HJ Gibney: “Australian Rules Football probably boasted the largest following, including some influential men. The first president of the Federal Capital Territory Australian National Football League, established in 1924, was Jeremiah James Dillon, a 114 kilogram, Victorian-born miner, who had come from the West Australian goldfields.</p><p data-block-key="8jv14">“Employed as a foreman on the main sewer, he was said to have a remarkable flow of profanity and to be totally illiterate. Life in Canberra in 1924: Construction, footy and drinking in Queanbeyan

<p data-block-key="1wm2f">About 21 years ago I met and fell in love with a cabinetmaker from Campbelltown. Tall, dark and handsome, he drove a hotted-up VL Commodore and owned a Staffie. When we first started dating, I was astounded that he could actually, you know, <i>build things</i>. Like a new TV unit when we needed one. Or a pergola. And he could (and did) re-face our entire kitchen.</p><p data-block-key="6pgsv">Today, he’s bald, with a couple of mad tattoo sleeves; and he complains endlessly about his bad back and knees. After two decades of being in love with a tradie, I’ve learned a lot. So if you’re thinking of plunging head first into a relationship with one, here are my pros and cons.</p><h3 data-block-key="bmrlq">Con: Your bathroom/kitchen reno slash new deck is going to take months (if not years).</h3><img alt="IMG_2771" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_2771.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="3v2d5">They’ll definitely sign up to reno the bathroom or kitchen because they want to keep the better half happy — but actually getting in and <i>doing the work</i>? Good luck. Be prepared to shower in a bathroom with no walls or floor tiles for a few months (or years in a friend’s case) or wash up in the laundry sink while you wait for your new kitchen.</p><h3 data-block-key="563o0">Pro: Even though the reno takes ages, it’ll save you a fortune.</h3><img alt="IMG_9900" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_9900.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="eivim">If you’re prepared to wait, the end result will be stellar and cost about half the price that it would have. (Shout out to Mitch for doing the plumbing and Matty for doing the tiling.) Also, a new bathroom or kitchen (or both) will add thousands of dollars to the value of your home.</p><h3 data-block-key="8cncj">Con: They’re always getting injured.</h3><img alt="20130722_1324052" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/20130722_1324052.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6061m">My cabinetmaker is always hurting his hands and fingers (the ends of his fingers are really, really dry and cracked – what’s that about?). My cousin-in-law is a boilermaker and somehow ends up with metal in his eyes (!?) even though he wears PPE religiously. It’s a dangerous world out there in the trades.</p><h3 data-block-key="63n2h">Pro: He enjoys what he does and the people he works with.</h3><img alt="415022187_10232098555346315_3935575509491562266_n" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/415022187_10232098555346315_393557550949156226.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="f5ucd">Honestly the joy tradies get from working together on a project is awesome. Also, job satisfaction is through the roof when you can see the fruits of your labor in something you’ve just designed, built or fixed.</p><h3 data-block-key="5omke">Con: The washing!</h3><img alt="IMG_2938" class="richtext-image full-width" height="480" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_2938.width-800.jpg" width="640"><p data-block-key="4funv">LAWD. Grease, oil and metal shards are just some of the things that need removing from tradie clothes. The high-vis shirts end up entirely black (I gave up on soaking them years ago). Oh, and finding ear plugs in the wash is common if your tradie does lots of welding.</p><h3 data-block-key="3u8op">Pros: A sweet set of tools, all claimable on tax.</h3><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-01-30 at 9.23.41 am" class="richtext-image full-width" height="455" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-01-30_at_9.23.41_am.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="f0c0v">And a nice new ute too, if you’re lucky.</p><h3 data-block-key="1aira">Con: Long hours and shift work.</h3><p data-block-key="tva6">Some trades are best undertaken when the rest of us are in bed, which can mean working long nights and in shifts. The kids love it. A friend’s kids will yell “Dad built that!” to anyone who will listen when they pass the ASIO building. There’s no Harry Street, no Potter Street (although there are main roads names after Ian and Mary Potter) and definitely no Malfoy Street. There<i> is</i> a Dobbie Place, though (okay, we know the spelling’s a little off), so if the heroic house-elf was one of your favourite characters, you’ll feel right at home here.</p><h3 data-block-key="a0kdd">Sanger Street, Franklin</h3><img alt="StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px5" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px5.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="6hb5l">BLT for me please, and a chicken schnitzel with lettuce and mayo for my husband.
