<p data-block-key="j6usu">A piece of masonite, slathered in black-and-white photos and official documents from the 1930s and 50s, has turned out to provide a beautiful background story to one of Canberra’s earliest buildings.</p><img alt="IMG_1898 (1)" class="richtext-image full-width" height="476" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1898_1.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="48vb5">The board was discovered on Collett Street in Queanbeyan, among a pile of rubbish awaiting collection by the local council. It was delivered to Zango by a reader who thought we might be interested in what appeared to be an unusual piece of Canberra nostalgia. Of course, we were.</p><img alt="IMG_1901" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1901.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="e77e6">What may have been a school project but looks more likely to be a showpiece for an anniversary of the building, shows the back story of the home of Canberra Dairy Society Limited on Mildura Street, Griffith.</p><img alt="IMG_1892" class="richtext-image full-width" height="440" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1892.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="4o48b">The inter-war, functionalist style building is still there today – although several further buildings have been added to the site – home to the Canberra headquarters of Capitol Chilled Foods Australia, where your treasured Canberra Milk and Dare Iced Coffee is treated, packed and distributed.</p><img alt="IMG_1887" class="richtext-image full-width" height="478" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1887.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6rabl">Photos on the board show the original 1937 model for the milk treatment depot, including a manager’s residence, which was added in 1940.</p><p data-block-key="8460b">According to the Canberra Museum and Gallery website, local dairy farmers joined forces in the 1930s to create the Canberra Dairy Society Limited, after ongoing complaints about milk quality and availability from Canberra’s ever-growing population.</p><img alt="IMG_1890" class="richtext-image full-width" height="488" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1890.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="16qmj">Although individual dairies had established cool rooms and wash up areas on-site, there was apparently no improvement in the quality of milk and its distribution.</p><p data-block-key="8pcdd">The purpose-built milk treatment depot offered bulk storage and modern cooling facilities.</p><img alt="IMG_1891" class="richtext-image full-width" height="485" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1891.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6931q">For many years milk was received in 45L (10 gallon) metal cans, brought to the factory by farmers who operated dairy farms at Acton, Fyshwick, and Kambah. The milk was delivered to Canberrans without bottling or pasteurisation, ladled into waiting containers.</p><img alt="IMG_1895" class="richtext-image full-width" height="573" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_1895.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="4qn4c">A new factory was added to the Mildura Street site in 1952, and pasteurisation and bottling began in 1958. Around this time, many local dairies ceased operation after the resumption of their land for the filling of Lake Burley Griffin in the early 1960s.</p><p data-block-key="7pflg">The original building and later additions have produced and distributed milk to the ACT community for more than 85 years.</p>

Kerbside garbage turns out to be a gorgeous piece of Canberra history

<p data-block-key="j9h8h">Wind the clock back 100 years and the capital looks something like this: the hulking silhouettes of a partly-built Parliament House and mostly built Hostel No.1 (now the Hyatt Hotel) rise from the land over near Capital Hill, with nothing but dusty, treeless plains between. The spire of St John’s, Reid dominates the skyline across the river, and the only other major building of note is the Eastlake Powerhouse.</p><img alt="old-canberra-100-years-19" class="richtext-image full-width" height="450" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/old-canberra-100-years-19.width-800.jpg" width="620"><p data-block-key="elg96">A light tramway runs from the powerhouse to the Yarralumla Brickworks, and dotted across the capital at the site of several major infrastructure projects - including its first main sewer - are rows and rows of tents, housing the thousands of men who’ve come from across the world to build Canberra from the ground up.</p><p data-block-key="a84p5">Life for the construction workers is no picnic: long hard days of labour and sleeping on mattresses made of hay in between. It’s little wonder, then, that they live for the weekends, which include two main pastimes.</p><h3 data-block-key="ds9ol">Heading over the border to drink in Queanbeyan.</h3><img alt="learn-days-end-workers-oph-3111468-1" class="richtext-image full-width" height="629" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/learn-days-end-workers-oph-3111468-1.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6v2te">In 1910, Minister for Home Affairs King O’Malley (yes he was a real person) banned liquor licences in the new Australian Capital Territory, marking the beginning of a 17-year dry spell for Canberra. This meant the thirsty workers building Canberra were forced to cross the border into Queanbeyan for a drink.</p><p data-block-key="78a69">In his 1988 thesis, the Australian National University’s HJ Gibbney describes King O&#x27;Malley&#x27;s liquor policy as “a national joke” .</p><p data-block-key="d5ni9">“The policy had always been resented in the Territory and, as the population expanded, both the law and its evasion became something of a national joke.</p><p data-block-key="ej806">“Queanbeyan hotels made large profits from thirsty Territorians and every Saturday afternoon in Queanbeyan became something of an orgy.</p><img alt="Royal Hotel souvenir" class="richtext-image full-width" height="504" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Royal_Hotel_souvenir.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="c422s">“Crawford Vaughan, a prohibition leader, wrote: ‘I saw Queanbeyan on Saturday and it was what one could expect in a town invaded by thousands of men from constructions camps … while it is deplorable to see crowds wandering from pub to pub, the conditions were no worse to than I have seen in towns adjacent to other construction works of a similar magnitude.’</p><p data-block-key="8hudu">“The law prohibited sale but not consumption and ‘sly grog’ prosecutions were not infrequent. Most men who visited Queanbeyan brought back bottled liquor, either for themselves or for friends, and despite the restrictions, there was a considerable trade in empty bottles.”</p><h3 data-block-key="1q4nl">Taking to the field for a game of Aussie Rules.</h3><p data-block-key="8ppoq">Most of Canberra&#x27;s 1924 population lived mostly for sports, with drinking and gambling enthusiastically pursued on the sidelines.</p><img alt="living in tents" class="richtext-image full-width" height="436" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/living_in_tents.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="a9gmm">HJ Gibney: “Australian Rules Football probably boasted the largest following, including some influential men. The first president of the Federal Capital Territory Australian National Football League, established in 1924, was Jeremiah James Dillon, a 114 kilogram, Victorian-born miner, who had come from the West Australian goldfields.</p><p data-block-key="8jv14">“Employed as a foreman on the main sewer, he was said to have a remarkable flow of profanity and to be totally illiterate. But, I&#x27;ve had some amazing picnics with the family there, and taught the kids to skim stones along the water while they were playing and jumping from rocks to rocks.</p><p data-block-key="4jfsq">For me, the most special part of swimming in Canberra is serving up hot chips to the local kids on their way home from Kambah Pool. It&#x27;s nostalgic and really special.</p>

<p data-block-key="iiv81">The <a href="/news/white-fences-and-red-roses-the-iconic-capricorn-park-stud-is-on-the-market/">news that Capricorn Park Stud was on the market</a> in April sent Canberrans into a social media frenzy — and now we can announce that the iconic property has officially sold.</p><p data-block-key="93khp">A Belconnen couple with three young children – all boys – purchased the property last month for $2.65 million. Their new six-bedroom home is the stud’s original 1960s homestead and comes with a 50-acre backyard, including an orchard and chicken run.</p><img alt="84-capricorn-place-springrange-nsw-2618-78106-image-0-20230418010145213024-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/84-capricorn-place-springrange-nsw-2618-78106-.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="fdoj0">“They loved the perfect mix between modern and eclectic style, the space for living in the home, the views and the pool,” sales agent <a href="/agents/sam-mcgregor/">Sam McGregor</a> from <a href="https://zango.com.au/agencies/marq/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MARQ Property</a> says.</p><p data-block-key="94tp8">“They knew the huge backyard would be the perfect place for three young boys to grow up, while basically staying the same distance from work and the Canberra CBD.”</p><p data-block-key="3i61d">Located 15km north of Canberra in Springrange, NSW, Capricorn Park Stud was established in the late 1960s as a cowboy-style Quarterhorse training and breeding facility. In the early 1990s, new owners changed it to a first-class Thoroughbred training facility.</p><img alt="84-capricorn-place-murrumbateman-nsw-2582-78106-image-0-20230706020255744767-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/84-capricorn-place-murrumbateman-nsw-2582-7810.width-800_pz8jhbw.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="f887m">It’s interesting to note that the new owners of Capricorn aren’t officially horse people, but with the equine infrastructure on the property including eight covered tie-up stalls, a fully enclosed sand roll yard and heated wash bay, that could change.</p><p data-block-key="pnc9">Interested buyers from Perth, Sydney and Melbourne streamed through the property during its five-month selling period, while other land owners from Springrange took the opportunity to size up the estate in relation to their own holdings.</p><img alt="84-capricorn-place-murrumbateman-nsw-2582-78106-image-0-20230406031639105480-crop-c0-5__0-5-1600x750-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="375" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/84-capricorn-place-murrumbateman-nsw-2582-7810.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="92pnr">“The style of the home – a genuine resort style dwelling – was absolutely loved by everyone who viewed it,” Sam says.</p><p data-block-key="7e40c">“The consensus was that it genuinely felt like a ski lodge … that might have been that it was on the market through winter.</p><p data-block-key="4uc4u">“The gardens and views were also an absolute stand out. Queanbeyan heritage home 'like a Sunday visit to nan's house' with a stunning modern twist

<p data-block-key="tja1i">It’s hard to imagine a time when “no-one wanted to buy a house in Kingston” but Rob Painter remembers it well.</p><p data-block-key="35ojg">It was the late 1970s: the inner south suburb was packed with students and hippies, living in run-down houses that had been zoned for redevelopment and allowed to deteriorate by developers. </p><img alt="IMG_7160" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1132" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7160.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9c9dh">Young Canberrans in flares, patterned shirts and long hair walked and cycled the streets, and Green Square was the place to be: specifically the Boot and Flogger, the pub tucked in the corner where you’d grab a beer before heading out onto the lawn to listen to a local band.</p><p data-block-key="oeko">“It was an interesting area in the 1970s, to say the least,” Rob says.</p><img alt="IMG_7173" class="richtext-image full-width" height="536" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7173.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="4vgab">“There were older people still in government houses but most people who were entering home ownership weren&#x27;t interested in buying in Kingston because its future was uncertain. </p><p data-block-key="2e44a">“I’d come from inner Sydney and so I loved the bohemian vibe.”</p><p data-block-key="77cfa">A young Rob, who’d studied architecture in Sydney before moving to the capital in 1976 to work for the Department of Urban and Regional Development, was loving his steady income as a graduate clerk. He’d thought about buying a house, and when he drove past <a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">61 Kennedy Street</a>, a 40-year-old ex-govvie, he loved the idea of living among the bohemian vibe of Kingston.</p><img alt="IMG_7172" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1188" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7172.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="84bje">“It was for sale for $32,000,” Rob recalls.</p><p data-block-key="c8fsb">“My salary at the time was $8,000 a year. The most anyone would lend me wass $30,000 — so that was the offer I put in and it was mine.”</p><p data-block-key="5rjk1">61 Kennedy Street became home “almost immediately”, mostly thanks to friends packed into the lounge room on Friday and Saturday nights; drinking, smoking, playing board games and dancing to Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.</p><p data-block-key="97faa">“Oh, this house has seen a lot of parties,” Rob says.</p><img alt="IMG_7161" class="richtext-image full-width" height="536" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7161.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9pjoo">“I was very social when I first bought it. I&#x27;m gay and I&#x27;ve got a wide group of friends. It was a very social house — arguably too social.</p><p data-block-key="8n4v6">“I got out the old photo albums, dusted them off: I haven&#x27;t looked at them for years.</p><p data-block-key="ank2m">“It was a very fun time. I&#x27;ve got lots of happy memories associated with this house.”</p><p data-block-key="35d74">An extension in 1997 saw a new section added to the back of the house; opening up the kitchen and adding a second living area and a new laundry. The old laundry became a second bathroom at this time, while the main bathroom was updated in 2006.</p><img alt="61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998-image-0-20230820080137951346-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998-imag.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="e2iea">Ever the entertainer, Rob designed the extended home to facilitate its many visitors, including friends, and nieces and nephews from overseas and across Australia who wanted to see Australia’s young capital. He created a separate zone of the house for himself; with the main bedroom, bathroom and dressing room able to be closed off for privacy while guests were staying.</p><p data-block-key="4lk6d">After 46 years, Rob is selling up — it’s only the second time the 148sqm heritage-listed home has been for sale in its 87-year history. Originally built in 1936, the property was owned by the Commonwealth Government until 1963, when the sitting tenant bought it. Rob bought it from this tenant in 1977.</p><img alt="IMG_7171" class="richtext-image full-width" height="531" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_7171.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="1brov">The new owners can extend the home, Rob says, in line with heritage guidelines, but the house cannot be knocked down. It’s one of around 50 homes in the Eastlake Heritage Housing Precinct: a precious reminder of a fledgling capital’s early years.</p><p data-block-key="asike">“It&#x27;s not a large family house,” Rob says.</p><p data-block-key="67jgs">“I see the new owners as a young professional couple, maybe with dogs, or a retired couple who like to garden.</p><p data-block-key="9t95m">“A small family could happily live here.</p><p data-block-key="auhf8">“But it’s definitely the perfect property for someone hoping to own a beautiful piece of Canberra history.”</p><p data-block-key="dnrdj">And Rob won’t be too far away – he’s bought a penthouse apartment just around the corner.</p><p data-block-key="230sq"><b>Number 61 Kennedy Street, Kingston, goes to auction at 10.30am on Saturday 23 September 2023.</b></p><p data-block-key="k1bp"><a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/61-kennedy-street-kingston-act-2604-84998/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><b>View the full listing.</b></a></p>

But for those who grew up there in the 1980s and 90s, the days were an awesome mix of school, going yabbying and watching the big kids do tricks at the skate park.</p><p data-block-key="41v0c">Here are the 11 things you only truly understand if you grew up there (according to the awesome Diana McKinlay from Team Zango).</p><p data-block-key="9mbie">1.Hanging out for when you were old enough to go to Mr K’s farm for end-of-year camp.</p><p data-block-key="6skqj">2. Making houses in the trees and tanbark at the edge of Charnwood Primary oval, and trying to leap over the tall koppers logs or giant patches of Spitfires without stacking.</p>

The classic Canberra duplex doesn't come much better than this

<p data-block-key="pwx3f">Canberra: land of iconic bus shelters, exceptional mountain biking and people who &#x27;only came for two years&#x27; and ended up staying.</p><p data-block-key="7a3ql">A city that somehow feels spacious and intimate all at once.</p><p data-block-key="4gd8q">As a purpose-built capital, we&#x27;ve had to market our fair city and its unique lifestyle to outsiders pretty much since day dot. Here are the various ways we&#x27;ve promoted Canberra over the years.</p><h3 data-block-key="9ljtj">The 1960s: Home of the Australian dream</h3><p data-block-key="50nld">The earliest marketing campaigns we can find for Canberra were post-WWII campaigns which focused on two key audiences: families and students. In 1965, the capital had a new lake and a commitment from Prime Minister Robert Menzies to make Canberra the true heart and showcase of the nation (until then, prime ministers had struggled to commit to the cold, new and quite foreign city).</p><img alt="IMG_5727" class="richtext-image full-width" height="974" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5727.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="ej6cm">During the 1960s and 1970s, the National Capital Development Commission established and gradually developed the new town centres of Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong to accommodate a growing population.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 12.31.05 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="556" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_12.31.05_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="25pn4">Building on the original design for Canberra, which focused on more central suburbs as far north as O&#x27;Connor and as far south as Red Hill, the new town centres maximised the natural contours of the land. Woden was established in 1964 and Belconnen in 1967. Tuggeranong came along in 1973. These additional town centres played a vital role in facilitating significant population growth between 1960 and 1975.</p><h3 data-block-key="f721g">1970s: The public service needs you</h3><p data-block-key="6qrd">In 1971, Canberra was being advertised as &#x27;a bush city&#x27;, with sprawling front lawns and oodles of space. Canberra is all of these, and is also a place for people to live.</p><p data-block-key="eg34n">&quot;It has an annual average of seven hours sunshine a day, freedom from smog and industrial pollution, and a spaciousness that gives the city an almost rural air.</p><p data-block-key="573rh">&quot;In developing suburban areas like Woden, Belconnen, Weston Creek - and in the near future Tuggeranong, new imaginative housing projects in &#x27;greenbelt&#x27; areas have their own neighbourhood shopping centres, schools and sports facilities.&quot;</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 12.33.19 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="960" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_12.33.19_pm.width-800.png" width="756"><p data-block-key="a3gdg">The brochure pictured above follows the lives of three women in the public service; and offers bonuses for those who can type 50 wpm. It also describes the type of men you might meet in Canberra (!), as well as the city&#x27;s vibrant social life: shopping at Woden Plaza, going home every day for lunch and eating at fancy restaurants for dinner. <p data-block-key="jbfc">By 1998, the Canberra population had reached 300,000 residents.</p><p data-block-key="9isns">This was the year the ACT Government launched <i>Feel the Power</i> - a campaign designed to promote Canberra as a bright, powerful and innovative city under former ACT chief minister Kate Carnell.</p><p data-block-key="6mugs">The message was promoted to outsiders on the side of a jet, and to locals through the option to own branded number plates. Critics described the campaign as &quot;bland and disappointing&quot;.</p><h3 data-block-key="77d07">2006: Live in Canberra</h3><p data-block-key="at8h5">The <i>Live in Canberra</i> campaign of 2006 included a roadshow Sydney and cities in regional NSW, and hoped to attract people to Canberra to help overcome a shortage of skilled labour. We sadly can&#x27;t find any pics for this one!</p><h3 data-block-key="28sc">2014: Confident, Bold, Ready</h3><p data-block-key="ai0b2">After an incredible centenary year in 2013, it was decided that Canberra needed it owns brand. Enter Confident, Bold, Ready: a clever play on the key letters of our city&#x27;s name. The ACT Government declared at the time: &quot;The city brand is for <i>all</i> of Canberra, not just the government&quot;.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 8.14.45 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="442" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_8.14.45_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="a8r4g">The $2.6 million campaign included a new logo for the capital and a website that &quot;identifies Canberra’s unique qualities in a single, unified, storytelling framework&quot;.</p><p data-block-key="d31nb">The logo was widely adopted by business, industry and organisations across the wider territory and can still be seen on marketing materials to this day.</p><h3 data-block-key="8cgqr">2018: Special edition number plates</h3><p data-block-key="5p7ds">Number plates have always played a key role in the marketing of the city and offer a way for Canberrans to spread the love. How we've sold the 'Canberra dream' to the rest of Australia over the years

<p data-block-key="7m37l">Ah, Canberra. Our beautiful home and one of only a handful of cities across the world planned and built for a very specific purpose. As the capital, we were designed to showcase the best of what Australia was and could be.</p><p data-block-key="3e80n">From the stone homes of the area&#x27;s first white-settled properties in the mid-1800s to the homes of today, it&#x27;s estimated 160,000 dwellings have been built to house the residents of Canberra.</p><p data-block-key="fi3f7">Let us take you on a journey through the homes of our glorious city, across the decades.</p><h2 data-block-key="2b70h">The 1900s: Tents and hessian bag walls</h2><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-22 at 12.44.36 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="436" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-22_at_12.44.36_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="8i99t">In March 1909, the initial camp for men surveying the area was established at the foothills of Kurrajong Hill (now known as Capital Hill and home to Parliament House).</p><p data-block-key="2ubi3">When workers arrived in 1910 to make the city&#x27;s first bricks and light its streets, camps were set up near key work areas across the capital, including at The Brickyards (later renamed Yarralumla), The Power House (Kingston), and the Cotter River. Camps were divided into accommodation for single men and married men.</p><img alt="IMG_5260" class="richtext-image full-width" height="480" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5260.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6j6uc">The majority of single men lived in tents measuring 8 by 10 feet, with two men per tent. Urinals were makeshift trenches dug into the ground, and a mattress was generally a bale of straw enclosed in hessian bags.</p><p data-block-key="11dkj">Married men built their own cottages using sapling frames and galvanised iron for the roof. Each home had a fireplace and earth floors. Many men repurposed old hessian cement bags, which, when opened and moistened, made excellent wind barriers for the walls. The exterior walls were whitewashed, while the interior was covered with pasted paper for added insulation.</p><h2 data-block-key="2p32h">The 1920s: Oliphant brings the glamour</h2><p data-block-key="6be1l">The first auctions of residential and business land in Canberra occurred on 12 December 1924, with blocks available at Ainslie, Blandfordia (Forrest), Civic, Eastlakes (Kingston), Manuka and Red Hill. In attendance that day was an entrepreneurial woman named Helen Brankenreg.</p><p data-block-key="b0hsd">The auctions led to the first privately-funded homes being built in Kingston, the Brackenreg Cottages. The homes had tiled rooves, front verandahs, high ceilings and made from rendered brick. </p><img alt="18-monaro-crescent-red-hill-act-2603-56427-image-0-20220406055604035217-thumbnail-1920x1920-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/18-monaro-crescent-red-hill-act-2603-56427-ima.width-800_e08iYqe.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="ac34v">By 1927, the building industry in Canberra was booming and some of our most notable buildings were constructed; including The Lodge and the Sydney building.</p><img alt="Reid-house" class="richtext-image full-width" height="256" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Reid-house.width-800.jpg" width="479"><p data-block-key="entf">The grand homes rising in the inner south and north were unlike the humble homes that housed the capital&#x27;s labourers. New homes were designed by architect Kenneth Oliphant, under the employment of the firm of Oakley &amp; Parkes, which had won a Commonwealth competition to design homes for senior public servants at Blandfordia (Forrest).</p><img alt="THE_PINES_cumytp" class="richtext-image full-width" height="575" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/THE_PINES_cumytp.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="frnum">Oliphant was influenced by the Mediterranean style and incorporated terracotta tiles, wrought iron framed balconies, earth coloured rough-stucco walls and shuttered windows into the homes.</p><h2 data-block-key="e02di">The 1930 and 40s: We need homes, and fast</h2><p data-block-key="bla0d">In the decades following, prefab cottages were brought in to keep up with the demand for housing in the burgeoning capital. This included the Tocumwal Cottages, two- and three-bedroom cottages trucked in from Tocumwal, NSW, to Canberra in the late 1940s.</p><img alt="IMG_5266" class="richtext-image full-width" height="557" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5266.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="5ja5i">The homes were originally located on the banks of the Murray River at Tocumwal, a purpose-built RAAF base during WWII. When the war ended, more than 200 of the cottages were demounted and transported by road to Canberra for re-establishment in the &quot;greatest mass movement of houses in the Commonwealth’s history&quot;. Most were set up in O&#x27;Connor but a few made it to other suburbs of the capital.</p><img alt="IMG-5288" class="richtext-image full-width" height="401" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG-5288.width-800.jpg" width="764"><p data-block-key="582nj">When the cottages arrived in Canberra, construction was simple: footings were laid on brick courses and finished in weatherboard to windowsill height. The homes had fibro sheeting between timber windows, and came without ceilings or internal lining.</p><h2 data-block-key="55cgi">The 1950s: Public housing and modernism</h2><p data-block-key="8k9e4">By the 1950s, Canberra was growing faster than any city in the country and the first medium density public housing was built, the Currong Flats. At the time, the flats were the city’s tallest building and provided fully self-contained units for single or dual occupancy: an improvement from the shared living accommodation provided in hostels.</p><img alt="IMG_5268" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5268.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="8i5rs">The 1950s also saw brutal modernist architecture brought to the bush capital by Italian architect Enrico Taglietti. Flat-lined rooves, huge windows and spaces built specifically for entertaining by senior public servants, were incorporated into homes that were way more spacious and spectacular than the modest Australian fibro houses popular at the time. </p><img alt="IMG_5269" class="richtext-image full-width" height="530" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5269.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="5m09o">Canberra’s infamous Benjamin (Round) House, designed by Alex Jelinek, was built in 1957. Based on the Pythagorean spiral, the house unfurled outwards, anchored by cylindrical glass and Queensland mahogany. It boasted large plates of glass overlooking the Brindabellas and stunning built-in cabinetry. Former resident Roger Benjamin&#x27;s book <i>Growing up Modern: Canberra&#x27;s Round House and Jelinek</i> captures Canberra&#x27;s obsession with the house at the time.</p><h2 data-block-key="cbvqg">The 1960s: Ensuites and exposed beams reign supreme</h2><img alt="img_02" class="richtext-image full-width" height="323" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/img_02.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="4emka">The Northbourne Housing Group launched in 1962, designed by architect Sydney Ancher. It consisted of 169 dwellings in five different styles, and lined Northbourne Avenue. Hiding behind the group on Canberra&#x27;s &#x27;main street&#x27; were the suburbs of Dickson and Lyneham.</p><img alt="img_04" class="richtext-image full-width" height="323" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/img_04.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="aqngl">While the group was cohesive in its post-war style of smooth textures, sharp geometric lines and pale colours, the collection of buildings drew criticism for being &#x27;too avant garde&#x27;. The senior public servants who lived there weren&#x27;t too happy about living next door to more junior pubic servants either.</p><img alt="IMG-5293" class="richtext-image full-width" height="326" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG-5293.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="a70hc">The economic boom in Canberra in the 1960s saw the introduction of ‘merchant builders’, including accountant turned builder Brian Pettit and entrepreneur Ron Sevitt. The hallmarks of their designs, along with others like Lend Lease, AV Jennings and Ken Woolley, included flat-pitched or dark tiled rooves, exposed beams, and painted or clinker brick walls. Ensuite bathrooms, modern kitchens and full-height clerestory windows also featured in homes that became family showpieces and statements of class. </p><img alt="IMG_5274" class="richtext-image full-width" height="633" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5274.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="8nndf">While not strictly a residential dwelling, a stunning example of Canberra’s 1960s architecture is the Carousel Restaurant (above), designed by Czech architect Miles Jakl and built in 1963 at Red Hill Lookout. Restaurant owners Peter and Lidia Vidovic also had a home designed by Jakl in Deakin: the aptly-named Vidovic House.</p><h2 data-block-key="18jht">The 1970s: Student housing and a tent embassy</h2><img alt="IMG_5270" class="richtext-image full-width" height="300" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5270.width-800.jpg" width="500"><p data-block-key="duu5h">A huge influx of students arrived in Canberra in the early 1970s, taking advantage of free tertiary education. The University of Canberra residences and ANU&#x27;s Toad Hall, both designed by John Andrews, were constructed, combining single rooms with communal kitchens and living areas. The designs included unique interlocking units, staggered in tiers, connected by paths and stairways.</p><img alt="IMG-5281" class="richtext-image full-width" height="355" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG-5281.width-800.jpg" width="630"><p data-block-key="djm3u">In 1972, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy was established on the lawns of Old Parliament House: a profound political statement calling for the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous Australians. It&#x27;s fair to say that the small community of tents and caravans has attracted the attention of the Australian public more than any other home in Canberra. </p><h2 data-block-key="b3d4v">The 1980s to 2000s: More is more</h2><img alt="Garran-Houses" class="richtext-image full-width" height="276" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Garran-Houses.width-800.jpg" width="425"><p data-block-key="3ktqk">The following decades brought a population boom to Canberra and an increasingly wealthy population. Canberra houses became renowned for their style and size. Designers like Harry Seidler-influenced the suburban built environment, creating innovative living designs that gave stylish yet practical housing solutions.</p><img alt="IMG-5296" class="richtext-image full-width" height="516" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG-5296.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="1qjl1">Canberra expanded south with Tuggeranong and to the north with Gungahlin. The young families of both regions built solid brick homes with timber decks and opted for large backyards. Features previously considered luxuries - like ensuites and attached garages - became the norm.</p><h2 data-block-key="35mdh">Today: Integration with the environment</h2><img alt="IMG-5297" class="richtext-image full-width" height="461" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG-5297.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="ba75c">High rise units, prefab homes and recycled materials have all become common in modern Canberra. Minimalist styles with clean lines and small, easy to maintain yards, reflect the busy Canberra lifestyle.
