It’s the day half of Canberra is cashed up and willing to buy lunch or splurge on a set of Country Road tea towels.</p><p data-block-key="j3od">The food delivery apps must get a massive workout that night too (imagine the data analysts at Uber wondering why half of Canberra orders butter chicken and garlic naans on the same night), and the morning teas at work are loaded with all the expensive stuff like pastries from Flute.</p><h3 data-block-key="9lh5b">The best choc tops are at Dendy.</h3><img alt="choc top" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/choc_top.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="9huug">They literally employ people to make them by hand. Outrageous. Macadamia for me please.</p><h3 data-block-key="5oqcd">The oldies party at 88mph and the kids go to Mooseheads.</h3><img alt="88mph" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/88mph.width-800.jpg" width="600"><p data-block-key="f51f3">You’ll never run into your teenager on a night out as long as you stick to the rules: mum and all her friends stick to the flashing dance floor at 88 while the kids do tequila shots at upstairs Moose. What the young ones seem to forget, though, is that mum and her friends once dominated the dance floor at Moose (old Moose that is, the version before it burnt down) to such classic tunes as <i>The Macarena</i>, <i>Coco Jumbo</i> and <i>Rhythm of the Night</i>. Designer and builder Herbert Thomson of Armadale, Victoria, created the carousel in 1913.</p><p data-block-key="6kqsh">The massive organ, 52 hand-carved wooden horses and two hand-carved elephants were imported from Germany, while the twisted brass upright poles were made in Scotland. It was a much-loved ride on the St. Kilda esplanade for 60 years before being sold at auction to the residents of Canberra for $40,000.</p><h3 data-block-key="ijc9">We go for Queensland in the State of Origin.</h3><img alt="queensland" class="richtext-image full-width" height="315" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/queensland.width-800.jpg" width="600"><p data-block-key="9i9p3">Never mind the fact we’re completely surrounded by NSW, when it comes to this rugby league grudge match, we go for the Queenslanders. Because who wants to see a Queanbeyan colleague gloating around the office after a Blues win? Not us.</p><h3 data-block-key="9i84p">From mid-December to the end of January, we become a ghost town.</h3><p data-block-key="362gl">The legend goes that Canberrans officially turn on the ‘out of office’ email around 15 December, and don’t return until the first week of school the following year. Broulee, Narawallee and Tuross are the destinations of choice, and rumour has it the population of Batemans Bay surges from 17,000 to 35,000 over the summer months.</p><h3 data-block-key="a57ek">You don’t swim at Pine Island.</h3><img alt="Pine-Islnd-Beach-area-access-1024x768" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Pine-Islnd-Beach-area-access-1024x768.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="7tsf4">It’s where the less-than-desirables go to drink and there’s broken glass everywhere. (This is, in fact, completely false. As a frequent swimmer at Pine Island, I read my book on the sandy shores under the pine trees and my kids love exploring the giant rocks in the water. It’s awesome. We've matched Sydney suburbs to their Canberra counterparts

The Kingston biscuit is one to be pulled apart and savoured (doesn’t everyone separate the buttery oat biscuits and lick the layer of milk chocolate? Just me?) much like life in Kingston itself: whether you’re living in old Kingston or on the lake’s edge.</p><h3 data-block-key="749dq">Yarralumla: Scotch Finger</h3><img alt="Arnotts_Image_1280px_853px_20244_Yarralumla" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Arnotts_Image_1280px_853px_20244_Yarralumla.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="5eurd">Welcome to timeless elegance. Yarralumla boasts wide, leafy streets dotted with stately homes and diplomatic residences. This means you can put anything you want on it to make it your own. Our city centre is quite literally the blank canvas for the events, eateries and retail experiences Canberrans universally adore. From the Multicultural Festival and Winter in the City to old and new shopping precincts and gourmet restaurants, it’s the foundation that brings so many flavours to life. You can’t beat Civic (or a Sao), that’s a fact.</p><h3 data-block-key="79h0g">Red Hill: Shortbread Cream</h3><img alt="Arnotts_Image_1280px_853px_20247_RedHill" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Arnotts_Image_1280px_853px_20247_RedHill.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="5mdct">The biscuit of royalty. Which of these cheeky Canberra bumper stickers is your fave?

<p data-block-key="j9h8h">Wind the clock back 100 years and the capital looks something like this: the hulking silhouettes of a partly-built Parliament House and mostly built Hostel No.1 (now the Hyatt Hotel) rise from the land over near Capital Hill, with nothing but dusty, treeless plains between. The spire of St John’s, Reid dominates the skyline across the river, and the only other major building of note is the Eastlake Powerhouse.</p><img alt="old-canberra-100-years-19" class="richtext-image full-width" height="450" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/old-canberra-100-years-19.width-800.jpg" width="620"><p data-block-key="elg96">A light tramway runs from the powerhouse to the Yarralumla Brickworks, and dotted across the capital at the site of several major infrastructure projects - including its first main sewer - are rows and rows of tents, housing the thousands of men who’ve come from across the world to build Canberra from the ground up.</p><p data-block-key="a84p5">Life for the construction workers is no picnic: long hard days of labour and sleeping on mattresses made of hay in between. It’s little wonder, then, that they live for the weekends, which include two main pastimes.</p><h3 data-block-key="ds9ol">Heading over the border to drink in Queanbeyan.</h3><img alt="learn-days-end-workers-oph-3111468-1" class="richtext-image full-width" height="629" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/learn-days-end-workers-oph-3111468-1.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6v2te">In 1910, Minister for Home Affairs King O’Malley (yes he was a real person) banned liquor licences in the new Australian Capital Territory, marking the beginning of a 17-year dry spell for Canberra. This meant the thirsty workers building Canberra were forced to cross the border into Queanbeyan for a drink.</p><p data-block-key="78a69">In his 1988 thesis, the Australian National University’s HJ Gibbney describes King O&#x27;Malley&#x27;s liquor policy as “a national joke” .</p><p data-block-key="d5ni9">“The policy had always been resented in the Territory and, as the population expanded, both the law and its evasion became something of a national joke.</p><p data-block-key="ej806">“Queanbeyan hotels made large profits from thirsty Territorians and every Saturday afternoon in Queanbeyan became something of an orgy.</p><img alt="Royal Hotel souvenir" class="richtext-image full-width" height="504" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Royal_Hotel_souvenir.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="c422s">“Crawford Vaughan, a prohibition leader, wrote: ‘I saw Queanbeyan on Saturday and it was what one could expect in a town invaded by thousands of men from constructions camps … while it is deplorable to see crowds wandering from pub to pub, the conditions were no worse to than I have seen in towns adjacent to other construction works of a similar magnitude.’</p><p data-block-key="8hudu">“The law prohibited sale but not consumption and ‘sly grog’ prosecutions were not infrequent. Most men who visited Queanbeyan brought back bottled liquor, either for themselves or for friends, and despite the restrictions, there was a considerable trade in empty bottles.”</p><h3 data-block-key="1q4nl">Taking to the field for a game of Aussie Rules.</h3><p data-block-key="8ppoq">Most of Canberra&#x27;s 1924 population lived mostly for sports, with drinking and gambling enthusiastically pursued on the sidelines.</p><img alt="living in tents" class="richtext-image full-width" height="436" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/living_in_tents.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="a9gmm">HJ Gibney: “Australian Rules Football probably boasted the largest following, including some influential men. The first president of the Federal Capital Territory Australian National Football League, established in 1924, was Jeremiah James Dillon, a 114 kilogram, Victorian-born miner, who had come from the West Australian goldfields.</p><p data-block-key="8jv14">“Employed as a foreman on the main sewer, he was said to have a remarkable flow of profanity and to be totally illiterate. Life in Canberra in 1924: Construction, footy and drinking in Queanbeyan

<p data-block-key="1wm2f">About 21 years ago I met and fell in love with a cabinetmaker from Campbelltown. Tall, dark and handsome, he drove a hotted-up VL Commodore and owned a Staffie. When we first started dating, I was astounded that he could actually, you know, <i>build things</i>. Like a new TV unit when we needed one. Or a pergola. And he could (and did) re-face our entire kitchen.</p><p data-block-key="6pgsv">Today, he’s bald, with a couple of mad tattoo sleeves; and he complains endlessly about his bad back and knees. After two decades of being in love with a tradie, I’ve learned a lot. So if you’re thinking of plunging head first into a relationship with one, here are my pros and cons.</p><h3 data-block-key="bmrlq">Con: Your bathroom/kitchen reno slash new deck is going to take months (if not years).</h3><img alt="IMG_2771" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_2771.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="3v2d5">They’ll definitely sign up to reno the bathroom or kitchen because they want to keep the better half happy — but actually getting in and <i>doing the work</i>? Good luck. Be prepared to shower in a bathroom with no walls or floor tiles for a few months (or years in a friend’s case) or wash up in the laundry sink while you wait for your new kitchen.</p><h3 data-block-key="563o0">Pro: Even though the reno takes ages, it’ll save you a fortune.</h3><img alt="IMG_9900" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_9900.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="eivim">If you’re prepared to wait, the end result will be stellar and cost about half the price that it would have. (Shout out to Mitch for doing the plumbing and Matty for doing the tiling.) Also, a new bathroom or kitchen (or both) will add thousands of dollars to the value of your home.</p><h3 data-block-key="8cncj">Con: They’re always getting injured.</h3><img alt="20130722_1324052" class="richtext-image full-width" height="600" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/20130722_1324052.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="6061m">My cabinetmaker is always hurting his hands and fingers (the ends of his fingers are really, really dry and cracked – what’s that about?). My cousin-in-law is a boilermaker and somehow ends up with metal in his eyes (!?) even though he wears PPE religiously. It’s a dangerous world out there in the trades.</p><h3 data-block-key="63n2h">Pro: He enjoys what he does and the people he works with.</h3><img alt="415022187_10232098555346315_3935575509491562266_n" class="richtext-image full-width" height="1066" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/415022187_10232098555346315_393557550949156226.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="f5ucd">Honestly the joy tradies get from working together on a project is awesome. Also, job satisfaction is through the roof when you can see the fruits of your labor in something you’ve just designed, built or fixed.</p><h3 data-block-key="5omke">Con: The washing!</h3><img alt="IMG_2938" class="richtext-image full-width" height="480" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_2938.width-800.jpg" width="640"><p data-block-key="4funv">LAWD. Grease, oil and metal shards are just some of the things that need removing from tradie clothes. The high-vis shirts end up entirely black (I gave up on soaking them years ago). Oh, and finding ear plugs in the wash is common if your tradie does lots of welding.</p><h3 data-block-key="3u8op">Pros: A sweet set of tools, all claimable on tax.</h3><img alt="Screen Shot 2024-01-30 at 9.23.41 am" class="richtext-image full-width" height="455" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2024-01-30_at_9.23.41_am.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="f0c0v">And a nice new ute too, if you’re lucky.</p><h3 data-block-key="1aira">Con: Long hours and shift work.</h3><p data-block-key="tva6">Some trades are best undertaken when the rest of us are in bed, which can mean working long nights and in shifts. A body clock that operates differently to the rest of the family’s can be a bit of a challenge.</p><h3 data-block-key="abv9d">Pro: He loves pointing out the buildings he worked on to the kids.</h3><img alt="168-44-constitution-avenue-campbell-act-2612-94437-image-0-20240129030_pjX3cNq-crop-c0-5__0-5-1600x750-70" class="richtext-image full-width" height="375" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/168-44-constitution-avenue-campbell-act-2612-9.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="8as45">“Dad did the kitchens in those!” he loves yelling as we drive past a new apartment block in Campbell or Civic. “Dad installed the desks in there,” he yells as we pass the Australian War Memorial. The kids love it. A friend’s kids will yell “Dad built that!” to anyone who will listen when they pass the ASIO building. <p data-block-key="fk3bb">The year 1989 was hands down Canberra’s most defining year.</p><p data-block-key="66g5e">It was the year we moved to self-government. It&#x27;s nostalgic and really special.</p>

Every time someone asked for my address I’d just belt out ‘Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na’.</p><h3 data-block-key="f4p8t">Disney Court, Belconnen</h3><img alt="StreetSignsredo_Image_1280px_853px2" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSignsredo_Image_1280px_853px2.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="1rell">Wish upon a star outside the front of your townhouse on Disney Court and your dreams come true. I mean, you’re already living in Belco, which means at least <i>one</i> of your dreams has come true. If you’re as obsessed with Disney as we are at the Zango office, this is definitely the street of choice in the ACT.</p><h3 data-block-key="8vfr">Mimosa Close, Isabella Plains</h3><img alt="StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px6" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px6.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="6i1da">Pass the champagne and the orange juice please! I feel like if you live on Mimosa Close you’re always wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sitting on the back deck in the sun – it never rains there – drinking the namesake cocktail of your street. Cute umbrella a must.</p><h3 data-block-key="e4vq4">Christmas Street, Theodore</h3><img alt="StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px8" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px8.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="dr8qh">Surely Santa Claus lives at number 34? And the elves at every other house on the street? Driving past this festive street though, especially in late November, is a little disappointing, with only one or two houses showcasing the Christmas spirit.</p><p data-block-key="2v4vg">(We literally <a href="https://zango.com.au/sale/21-18-christmas-street-theodore-act-2905-88131/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">just missed our chance</a> to live on this street.)</p><h3 data-block-key="8fms3">Simpson Street, Watson</h3><img alt="StreetSignsredo_Image_1280px_853px3" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSignsSimpson_Image_1280px_853px8.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="817ou">Willing to live on this street only if it comes with a Moe’s Tavern down the road and a Kwik-e-Mart run by Apu. And my lawns are mowed by Groundskeeper Willie.</p><h3 data-block-key="c93bk">Bogan Place, Kaleen</h3><img alt="StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px_guBaUQi.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="ek631">Of course it’s located in Kaleen! Just kidding. We hear this street sign gets stolen more than any other in Canberra, and it’s not hard to see why. Ten points for actually spotting a bogan on Bogan Place.</p><h3 data-block-key="ebj62">Dobbie Place, Watson</h3><img alt="StreetSignsredo_Image_1280px_853px4" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Dobbie_Image_1280px_853px.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="3h5ub">For Harry Potter fans, dream street names are few and far between in Canberra. There’s no Harry Street, no Potter Street (although there are main roads names after Ian and Mary Potter) and definitely no Malfoy Street. There<i> is</i> a Dobbie Place, though (okay, we know the spelling’s a little off), so if the heroic house-elf was one of your favourite characters, you’ll feel right at home here.</p><h3 data-block-key="a0kdd">Sanger Street, Franklin</h3><img alt="StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px5" class="richtext-image full-width" height="533" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/StreetSigns_Image_1280px_853px5.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="6hb5l">BLT for me please, and a chicken schnitzel with lettuce and mayo for my husband. This sounds like a great place to live, but only if you want to spend your whole life salivating.</p>

Here are the Canberra streets we’d give anything to live on

<p data-block-key="rme7n">For me, the line out the door of the Erindale Goodberry’s on weeknights is peak Canberra.</p><p data-block-key="dsoc9">I love all the people gathered in the front corner booths, loudly enjoying Cookie Monsters and Fererro Rocher custards, while I wait for my large vanilla with jaffas, cookie dough and chocolate flakes.</p><p data-block-key="aaau3">But Goodberry’s Creamery isn’t quite the Canberra icon we think it is.</p><img alt="goodberry-s-creamery" class="richtext-image full-width" height="309" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/goodberry-s-creamery.width-800.jpg" width="550"><p data-block-key="12g52">The custard was first made in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1988; in a quest “to create the finest frozen dessert available anywhere in the world”.</p><p data-block-key="5266h">Raleigh is located smack-bang in the middle of North Carolina, on the US east coast, exactly 15,726.5km away from Canberra. There are four Goodberry’s stores in Raleigh (population 469,000) and five others in cities across the state, including Durham, Cary and Wake Forest.</p><p data-block-key="2svd8">The menus in the US are almost identical to the stores here – except we offer nachos and hotdogs (they don’t) and you can take home a custard pie from a Goodberry’s over there.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-11-20 at 1.09.03 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="568" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-11-20_at_1.09.03_pm.width-800.png" width="465"><p data-block-key="8n0tt">You can also order a drink in the US stores called a ‘Lime Rickey’, which could easily be added to the menu here as a tribute to Canberra Raiders coach, Ricky Stuart.</p><p data-block-key="e25c9">The big marketing line in Raleigh is that the custard’s so thick “we serve it to you upside down”. There’s also a big fountain out the front of one of the Raleigh stores, where customers can throw in a coin and make a wish. The money is then donated to local community groups.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-11-20 at 1.15.49 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="505" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-11-20_at_1.15.49_pm.width-800.png" width="763"><p data-block-key="9l6l4">According to the US website, Goodberry’s Creamery set out to create a custard recipe that would harken back to the 1930s, when ice cream was made freshly, with honest ingredients, right at the creamery.</p><p data-block-key="ebnj9">“Our philosophy was that sometimes what you leave out is as important as what you put in, and we decided to leave out all the artificial and chemical ingredients,” it says.</p><p data-block-key="91su7">“We would use fresh milk, fresh cream, eggs, honey, pure cane sugar, and only natural flavorings to make our frozen custard. To keep it rich and creamy, we wouldn’t whip it all up with air during the freezing process. We would make it every hour to ensure optimal freshness and flavor.”</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-11-20 at 1.14.54 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="333" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-11-20_at_1.14.54_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="ehijl">Delicious.</p><p data-block-key="1b039">But all of this begs the question: how on earth did a frozen custard creamery from the United States make its way to Canberra, and to Canberra alone?</p><p data-block-key="acbev">Did a Canberran try it overseas and fall so in love they <i>had</i> to launch one in their home town? Or did one of the original owners move here and decide to set up shop? We&#x27;re waiting on an official response from the owners of the Erindale store, but we do know this: the first Australian Goodberry&#x27;s store opened in the late 1990s on Gartside Street, Erindale, where the store remains, almost 25 years later.</p><p data-block-key="43am0">In 2003, the Erindale store sold to its current owners, while the previous owner began expanding the franchise, first to Belconnen, then to Dickson and Woden. Every store except Erindale would eventually fail.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-11-20 at 1.08.40 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="442" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-11-20_at_1.08.40_pm.width-800.png" width="347"><p data-block-key="qbna">According to the Australian website:</p><p data-block-key="2jti3">“In 2007, the Erindale team met with Goodberry&#x27;s in the US and reforged the partnership that had been broken by the collapse of the old franchisor. Today, the alignment between the US and Australian stores is stronger than ever.</p><p data-block-key="2ocaa">“In 2012, the team at Erindale were pleased to return the Goodberry&#x27;s name and fantastic product to the Belconnen store.”</p><p data-block-key="562cu">Sadly, <a href="https://www.goodberrys.com/products/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the merchandise they sell on the US website</a> doesn’t ship to Australia. So it looks like a visit to Raleigh, North Carolina, is now on the bucket list.</p>

There’s only one other state in the world where you can buy Goodberry’s – and it’s 15,000km away

<p data-block-key="pwx3f">Canberra: land of iconic bus shelters, exceptional mountain biking and people who &#x27;only came for two years&#x27; and ended up staying.</p><p data-block-key="7a3ql">A city that somehow feels spacious and intimate all at once.</p><p data-block-key="4gd8q">As a purpose-built capital, we&#x27;ve had to market our fair city and its unique lifestyle to outsiders pretty much since day dot. Here are the various ways we&#x27;ve promoted Canberra over the years.</p><h3 data-block-key="9ljtj">The 1960s: Home of the Australian dream</h3><p data-block-key="50nld">The earliest marketing campaigns we can find for Canberra were post-WWII campaigns which focused on two key audiences: families and students. In 1965, the capital had a new lake and a commitment from Prime Minister Robert Menzies to make Canberra the true heart and showcase of the nation (until then, prime ministers had struggled to commit to the cold, new and quite foreign city).</p><img alt="IMG_5727" class="richtext-image full-width" height="974" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/IMG_5727.width-800.jpg" width="800"><p data-block-key="ej6cm">During the 1960s and 1970s, the National Capital Development Commission established and gradually developed the new town centres of Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong to accommodate a growing population.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 12.31.05 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="556" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_12.31.05_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="25pn4">Building on the original design for Canberra, which focused on more central suburbs as far north as O&#x27;Connor and as far south as Red Hill, the new town centres maximised the natural contours of the land. Woden was established in 1964 and Belconnen in 1967. Tuggeranong came along in 1973. These additional town centres played a vital role in facilitating significant population growth between 1960 and 1975.</p><h3 data-block-key="f721g">1970s: The public service needs you</h3><p data-block-key="6qrd">In 1971, Canberra was being advertised as &#x27;a bush city&#x27;, with sprawling front lawns and oodles of space. Our population stood at 146,000.</p><p data-block-key="bp5oo">APS employment and propaganda was at an all-time high, with school leavers being targeted and recruited by the thousands to build new systems in tax and family services, among others.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 1.22.52 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="793" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_1.22.52_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="apn3t">The <i>Canberra, past, present and future</i> brochure of 1972 describes Canberra as:</p><p data-block-key="8lbg">&quot;A centre for the nation to make its laws, honour the great, welcome important overseas dignitaries, and provide a suitable venue for national and international seminars and conferences ... Canberra is all of these, and is also a place for people to live.</p><p data-block-key="eg34n">&quot;It has an annual average of seven hours sunshine a day, freedom from smog and industrial pollution, and a spaciousness that gives the city an almost rural air.</p><p data-block-key="573rh">&quot;In developing suburban areas like Woden, Belconnen, Weston Creek - and in the near future Tuggeranong, new imaginative housing projects in &#x27;greenbelt&#x27; areas have their own neighbourhood shopping centres, schools and sports facilities.&quot;</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 12.33.19 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="960" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_12.33.19_pm.width-800.png" width="756"><p data-block-key="a3gdg">The brochure pictured above follows the lives of three women in the public service; and offers bonuses for those who can type 50 wpm. It also describes the type of men you might meet in Canberra (!), as well as the city&#x27;s vibrant social life: shopping at Woden Plaza, going home every day for lunch and eating at fancy restaurants for dinner. <p data-block-key="jbfc">By 1998, the Canberra population had reached 300,000 residents.</p><p data-block-key="9isns">This was the year the ACT Government launched <i>Feel the Power</i> - a campaign designed to promote Canberra as a bright, powerful and innovative city under former ACT chief minister Kate Carnell.</p><p data-block-key="6mugs">The message was promoted to outsiders on the side of a jet, and to locals through the option to own branded number plates. Critics described the campaign as &quot;bland and disappointing&quot;.</p><h3 data-block-key="77d07">2006: Live in Canberra</h3><p data-block-key="at8h5">The <i>Live in Canberra</i> campaign of 2006 included a roadshow Sydney and cities in regional NSW, and hoped to attract people to Canberra to help overcome a shortage of skilled labour. We sadly can&#x27;t find any pics for this one!</p><h3 data-block-key="28sc">2014: Confident, Bold, Ready</h3><p data-block-key="ai0b2">After an incredible centenary year in 2013, it was decided that Canberra needed it owns brand. Enter Confident, Bold, Ready: a clever play on the key letters of our city&#x27;s name. The ACT Government declared at the time: &quot;The city brand is for <i>all</i> of Canberra, not just the government&quot;.</p><img alt="Screen Shot 2023-05-30 at 8.14.45 pm" class="richtext-image full-width" height="442" src="https://d2t3vhau9g43uy.cloudfront.net/media/images/Screen_Shot_2023-05-30_at_8.14.45_pm.width-800.png" width="800"><p data-block-key="a8r4g">The $2.6 million campaign included a new logo for the capital and a website that &quot;identifies Canberra’s unique qualities in a single, unified, storytelling framework&quot;.</p><p data-block-key="d31nb">The logo was widely adopted by business, industry and organisations across the wider territory and can still be seen on marketing materials to this day.</p><h3 data-block-key="8cgqr">2018: Special edition number plates</h3><p data-block-key="5p7ds">Number plates have always played a key role in the marketing of the city and offer a way for Canberrans to spread the love.
